SUPERKENT ; what next.......?

Seeing as (on SKySports) we're now called the "Oneday runners-up" team, any ideas on the next step forward.
I think we're okay with the openers (unless the ECB discover Canterbury and bring their contracts with them) and the 'Vanman' at 3 is pretty solid. But from there on it gets alittle tricky.
(Sir) Matty Walker,Justin Kemp,Neil Dexter andDarren Stevens are all ,still, great players who would walk into all the other counties sides, but which 2 would you put at 4 & 5 ?
Macca should be in at 6, Jonah at 7.
8/9/10 = Yasser, Asar and pingu (Treadwell to the non kent) which leaves Saggers, Chef(Cook), and Joseph battling for the no 11 spot. This is without the academy kids, and i know on paper it looks good. But we've only got the 20/20 cup from last year to show for it.Blimey, even those essexgirls and the slurreybrownhatters have more than that.

It's worth pointing out that Surrey look like getting relegated from the County Championship this season, while Essex are in the second tier. Kent are the only team who've remained in the first devision of the County Championship since its inception. However having a good CC side has to be balanced with a good one day outfit and Kent have managed this pretty well over the years. Perhaps they should focus on one discipline and aim to be very good at that rather than try and be good at both proper and pajama cricket?

Darren Stevens is of course a damn fine cricketer...but his bowling is a bit of a weak link at times....(indeed, one over at The Rose Bowl going for 22!)...I'd say there is something that needs looking at for next season.

how about gettin some englishmen in yr team, a disgrace. Kolpack players everywhere

Apart from Key (and perhaps Denly) I wouldnt pay to watch any of the mediocre cricketers Kent have stuffed their ranks with eg Stevens, Kemp, Mahmood, Arafat, Mclaren.

I understand their youth policy too is find all rounders who are good fielders, bowlers and batsman, but not great at anything.

Lets see some specialist batsman and bowlers brought in .... players that the public can get excited about watching

Mediocre...you are of course on a wind-up Ken...please tell me you are FFS!!

mahmood mediorce you are having a laugh

I think Kemp has been a huge dissapointment.

The boys are a ueseful side, just murdered Derby by 9 wickets with 30 overs left to bat.

    Derbyshire must be very mediocre!

Azhar mahmood was finished yrs ago, and derby are a very poor side.

Joseph finding a nice groove now. Took 5-13 off his 8 overs vs Derby and was the only one to put the wind up Essex on Saturday. I think Kemp has been a major disappointment and is simply not a #4 batsman even for limited overs. His dismissal on Sat was atrocious (though he wasn't alone) and, while he did well to get us the last over in the 20/20 Final, to allow the last 2 balls to be dots was pathetic.

Agreed about Kemp, all season we've been saying that he "owes us one".Still waiting........
as for no Englishmen, Key, Denly, Walker, Stevens, Jones, Tredwell, Saggers, Cook, Joseph...............

    Charlton Carl,

Most counties are littered with players from the other test playing nations, makes the game competitive. Hardly a disgrace is it?

Do they have the same amount as the likes of kent, Northants, and leicester? i doubt it.

And it is a disgrace as it harms the national game.

I tend to think that the English youngsters are having their development inhanced by having strong players from other test playing nations playing against them.

Young Joe Denly for instance will learn a lot more facing strong top class bowling rather than run of the mill county fodder. It sets them up better for when they evetually play test cricket.

I agree with you when we are talking about top players coming over as an overseas player. Young batsman or bowlers will improve.

The problem is with the mediocre players, the likes of kemp and van jaarsveld at kent. Collins and some random who played for surrey on monday.

These players i feel hinder youngsters rather than help them develop. Big money on players who are looking for a nice little nest egg.

I would hardly call Van Jaarsveld mediocre, shrewd cricketing brain, kids can learn a lot off of him, bags of runs to boot, even a five for this season. Kemp has been very successful internationally but has struggled this season at county level. Kent have 17 squad players only 4 are inelegible to play for England, I can't see that hindering the delvelopment of youngsters in the county.

There are far too many ageing english county pros going through the motions weakening the standard of competive long form cricket, they are probably hindering the development of youngsters to a greater degree.

    ..........

Kent have three Kolpak players Martin van Jaarsveld, Justin Kemp and Ryan Mclaren while Northants and Leicester have five or six. Essentially I agree with, it's easier to buy in Kolpak players and keep them for a season or two rather than develop home-grown talent. As to the argument about it making players like Joe Denly a better batsman, while it's true that he'll progress faster by playing against better bowlers, but that only works if he gets a chance, a couple of seasons ago he was stuck in the second team.

You only have to look at the Premier League to see what's happening in football - most clubs are stuffed full of foreign footballers and the consequence is that the English team is struggling, despite the English premier league being the best supported league in the world.

The trick is getting the balance right - good quality players like Van Jaarsveld who are here on long-term contracts add to the game, just as say Thierry Henry did in the premier league, but attracting a lot of cricketing mercanaries who'll only stay for a season or two and prevent home grown talent from developing is a short-term fix at the expense of a proper long term good of the County system and English team.

    Mclaren 63 of 71, Mr mediocre 58 of 75

    .............

    You need to define "mediocre"...

Martin van Jaarsveld averages over 45 in FC cricket and over 40 and has consistently scored highly for Kent over his few years at the club. I wouldn't call those numbers "mediocre".

He's currently top of the averages in both batting and bowling in The County Championship side.
In the Friends Provident, he tops the batting average and has top scored with 122.
At The Oval recently he scored a century in BOTH innings and took 5 fer...not done quite so well in The 20/20 he finished up 6th in the averages....is that what you mean by Mr Mediocre?
By the way carl, what is a score car?? Oh yeah, it seems we can all make mistakes.....silly me and silly you....touche I believe!! LOL!

no i made a slight typo, you my friend were wrong. slight difference.

As for him being top of the bowling averages, that is because of his 5 for what ever it was against the worst Surrey team there has been in 15yrs.

Thanks for getting me through a long afternoon at work yesterday. I was so bored and needed something to get me through the day. I need to do something to stop thinking about my poor scricket team - Surrey.

MVJ was the top run scorer in the FP competition overall and has scored over a 1000 runs at county level this season. I wish I was that mediocre.

See, SUPERKENT can take your mind off work (and slurreybrownhatters).
I know we've beaten the slurreyboyz in most games this season, but why is it suddenly their a bad side. Is it not that Kent were the better side in the FPT,20/20 and championship ? Its like when the addicks won 4-2 at arsenal on that magical sunday !! " Arsenal were off form, Charlton were lucky".

oh, thinking back, not a good example.
  • Options
Surrey aren't too bad, there are porbably only three things they can't do: bat, bowl and field, other than that they are useful.
  • Options
we are a very poor aging side. Don't get me wrong you boys have got better but come on one trophey in how many yrs??

We are a bowler, a batsman, and a wicketkeeper short. Have been since last season. We would of gone down last yr had it not been for a run at the end of the season.
