Gislason - other players coming through.

edited November 2006 in General Charlton
Keep reading good "reports" about him yet we never see the lad near the 1st team. It is easy for people on here to say "oh he is not good enough" blah blah - with repsect none of you have a clue whether a player can make the step up or not or whether he is good enough. You might have seen them in one game doesn't give you the know how does it.

I am getting bored of not seeing players coming through the ranks now. We always prided ourselves on having a few.

Alastair John, Lloyd Sam, Myles Weston, Nathan Ashton, Sankofa, Walker, - these boys should be knocking on the door now they are 18/19 for god sake..... Look at Aston Villa - for example - at the weekend agaisnt Wigan they must have had 4-5 in the starting line up. 2 at centre defence FFS.

The club keep banging on about Valley Gold etc but it is time to see fruits of your money isn't it.

Rommedahl, HH, M Bent, Sorondo, Lisbie, I am sure some can name others, but how many more chances do these players get. I am not saying we should put a team of kids out, that is daft, but the so called Senior Pros are not doing it time and time again.

If these "kids" are not good enough isn't it high time you people who pay into Valley Gold start questioning what the hell is done with the money you loyally pay in every month.

Or am I being harsh.

  • No, you're spot on.
  • You're being harsh ;- )

At least we know that Robson knows the young players well having working with many of them for the pst three years either at U18 level or in the reserves.

    You in Bartram's on Thursday?

of those you mention only Lloyd Sam in my opinion is good enough to make it. The others are not and will not be. Gislason is a bit younger and not ready at the moment. However, can they do any worse than the performances we saw from some on Saturday ? Unlikely and maybe it is time to risk one or two.
  • Large, if thats the case then why are they still at the club? Why arent they being sold to lower league clubs (or at least loaned). At least this would then give the opportunity to the younger guys (16,17,18 year olds) to play in the reserves and see if the next "batch" are any good?
  • Henry - yes see you Thursday -Yeah Robson may well work with them but will we see them challenging for 1st team places.

Large - As I said you are neither qualified nor know enough about youth football to say these lads are good enough. SorRY I don't mean to be rude but that is fact. I respect your opinion on it definitely as you seem to go to more ressie games etc than most.

If Lloyd Sam was that good how come he struggled as Sheff Weds? H e did not make much of an impact did he.
  • I thought that Sheff Wed wanted to keep Sam cos he done such a good job for them?
  • Arf - And pardon my ignorance here, but what makes you qualified to?
  • [cite]Posted By: CharltonDan[/cite]Arf - And pardon my ignorance here, but what makes you qualified to?

The numbers coming through to the first team have been underwhelming.

Lloyd Sam, Sankofa...then who? Who was the last player before that to make it through from the reserves? Even Sam & Sankofa only have a handful of games between them.
  • I haen't said I am qualified Dan not once.

I am asking why none of our yougsters are knocking on the door of the 1st team and that Valley Gold subscribers surely have the right to start questioning where their money is being spent..

We supposedly have a few promising youngsters - my list of players for example - I am merely quoting what I have read over the last couple of years, they are about as close to the 1st team as I am. A few sub appearances here or there. Sankofa got a couple of run outs at the end of last season as Curbs knew he was leaving, we were safe so sod it why not.

I used the Aston Villa example - they weren't much better than us last season. They get a new manager - he brings in Cahill, Ogbonlahor, Ridgwell ( i know o'dreary picked him last season), Isiiah Obourne, Peter Whittingham from the youth

Could you honestly see us having 5 - I don't know - I don't go to reserve games. When the reserves play you hear the names of the players I listed being moentioned a lot but when it comes to the 1st team - WHERE ARE THEY.
  • 1. They can't be any worse

    2. They will be fighting for themselves and for the team - they won't care who the manager is if they are picked so I say give them a go

  • so,with our injured players also coming back.which players are we dropping and which youngsters are replacing them?
  • there is only one i would consider at present, and that would be dropping romm for lloyd sam.

the lad deserves a chance, the senior one in front of him is consistently underperforming, and if he knows he can put in as lacklustre performance as saturday, and still hold his place, then he will continue to underperform IMO.
  • I thought Walker looked up for it in pre-season and was scoring. Don't know anything about the others.

I'm still hoping that Pouso gets in the team as he is, on paper, what we need and seemed as if he was getting stuck in yesterday. Kish, Pouso and Reid in the Middle, Sam and Thomas wide and baby Bent upfront. Young, Diawara, Faye and Traore at the back with Carson in goal? Romm, Myhre, HH, Hughes and Walker on the bench. This is the way forward and I'm ringing Les this PM to tell him so.
  • Arfur,

Like to see that you stole my original ideas from another post and made more of it because your a more well known poster!

I agree with everything you say here, M Bent, Sorondo, Lisbie, Hughes... none of these really deserve first team status so give the others a go, i'm sure they can't do much worse... infact they can't as we are bottom of the league!

Llyod sam is 21+ now, which isn't young these days as a footballer.

We have alot of quality in our academy, I watched quite a few of the U18 games last season as I had a mate who played for them he didn't get a professional deal though.

I must say that I would easily give a go:

Myles Weston (If he wasn't injured at the start of the campaign he would be involved by now)
    Harry Arter (Alot of class)
Josh Wright (Good midfielder and set piece taker, rate highly)
Donovan Simmonds (New he would have a bright start to this season he looked last year)
Jani Tanksa (Needs to be go out on loan)

    What you think Mr Reed?

Sam has had chances altho limited in the first & struggled at a Championship side so why does he deserve a chance exactly? What has he done to warrant it? If he cant perform at that level then he wont be able to in the prem. I've never been impressed with the kid, he is a lesser quality Rommedahl.

They may be quality for the reserves or u18s but even Lisbie used to do alright for the reserves but look at him in the prem, that difference in standards is immense.

I must be the only person who thinks Sorondo is actually a decent player? Much rather have him instead of El K & Fortune any day, hardly been given many chances with the injuries has he? Harsh on him IMO.

At the end of the day if the management thought they were good enough to play then why would be in the side.
  • Fair point on Sorondo I actually quite like him!

when you say "If the management thought they were good enough" that could mean that Dowie didnt think they were. One game in under Reed and Robson and we have already seen Llyod Sam make hes first premiership start of the season. So maybe a sign of things to come under Reed.
  • True, makes you wonder why Reed might think it & the others not though. Certainly going to be an interesting run up to the New Year.
  • Re Sorondo: By that chalk Lisbie is a good player, cos if it wasn't for injuries etc he would've had a decent run out, etc, etc.

    CLAPTRAP!!!

Point about Sorondo is that he MIGHT be a good player, but the fact is that he has spent the best part of three seasons sitting in the treatment room flicking through Uruguayan porno mags (FACT, by the way), which is no good to man or beast (which brings us neatly back to the Uruguayan porno mags again, FACT!!!) - and certainly no good to Charlton.

Wonder how much green he has picked up these past few years and how much it works out at per minute of competitive football.
  • Sorondo MIGHT be a good player but Lisbie isnt a good player, FACT. We need more games to see if he is & from what I've seen so far he aint half bad.

  • Yeah, don't disagree - can see something there meself - but how long have we got? Even if/when he does come back, how long before he ***ks off out of it again?!
  • Hes not an old boy (27 according to footie manager) so definately got a good 5 years left in him. Hopefully we can get him back to full fitness & give him a good run out - Does anyone know if he had these problems with Palace? Is he actually currently injured, if so with what?
  • He finished 2nd in the Palace Suppopers Player of the Year awards behind AJ the year they went down. Also you don't get to play for Internationale as a defender if you ain't much cop.
  • Yeah, but Fish played for Lazio. You ask he Ipswich fans what there views of him were after a long spell out through injury!!!

Don't get me wrong. I DO think Sorondo has got promise, and he's got to be better than that clown El Karkouri, but it just seems to me as if he's NEVER going to be fully fit for very long. What's he played - 8 games out of the last 50/60?
  • Sorry Tom if I have pissed you off but I didn't steal your idea. I just saw Villa's line up and saw how many home grown players in their 1st XI and it got me thinking. I never even saw your message. BUT WE have got the topic noticed.

I saw Tanska and Wright play for u18 last season when I was one of the linesman and, along with Sheku who we have let go to Warford, they impressed me but it was only 1 game.

As for Reed I like the fact he is a CHARLTON man and a fan to boot. BUT he's got to get proper ruthless and NOW. Rommedahl has to be dropped despite the fact I absolutely love him when he is in full flight but that is not happening enough.
  • Arf, I think alot of the problem is the step up from reserve team footabll to Premier league football, rather than Championship football.
I know this doesn't answer you point about Villa, but it seems that we're trying to blood players at lower league clubs on loan more. I think reserve football doesn't have that edge to it as the points don't mean as much as they do in league football. I'd go as far as to say it could even improve them mentally as much as anything?
  • scott parker was the best example of that Stoney.
  • Lisbie is Charlton through and through and in most of his recent performances between injury has played quite well. Did he not have a good game v Arse?

Sorondo has looked quite good in his cameos for us and I would really like to see him make progress; the rest of the season alongside Diawara would be a start...

Traore in at left back, Gibbs on the bench; what else can we hope for.

Llloyd Sam is a question, not making it in the rough and tumble of the Championship which is sooo different from the Prem is no real indication, and did Sheff Wed really want to let him come back?
