  • Unless they can state the case for extending the number of CL places. They've done it before, 1, 2, 3, now we're up to 4. Why not have 5 English teams in the CL? If the people who want it have got the money, they may just find a way of getting it.

Liverpool did manage it after they won the thing a few years back, but I really can't see the rest of Europe allowing five English teams in the CL when most countries have three - including one who has to go through the qualification round.

One of those teams is going to miss out...

Unless of course they extend the Champions league to include more teams - It would not surprise me - The big teams would then just play their 2nd teams in the FA and League Cups (They often do already anyway)
  • Congratulate? Congratulate what exactly? Rich people bought their football club, yeah, well done, great achievement.

Screw City, screw Man U, screw Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham.

I don't care. All I care about is Charlton. These so called "top" 4 do more to undermine and devalue the game I love with every pound they spend. Just look at Berbatov, so he might well have achieved something and may well be the toast of the bars of Bulgeria but is he not the epitome of the dis-loyal cash seeking so called star that the modern game is all about. What exactly will Manchester City bring to the game of football with their multi-millions?

Ultimately we'll end up with a situation where we have four or five people sitting in the same jacuzzi owning everything.

I agree with the sentiments expressed in your post - but not particularly about Berbatov. if he was truly only interested in the money then he would have gone to Man Shitty yesterday. they were ready to offer him absolutely ridiculous money (the figure I heard quoted regularly was 140k a week) which is far, far more than he'll be on at ManYoo. I agree that he's a disloyal ponce, but don't necessarily think that money was the main motivator in his desire to move, and wouldn't put him up there as the shining example of mercenary modern footballers. For that you just have to take a look over the Thames at our erstwhile neighbours Wet Spam - Ljungberg, Bellamy, Neill - the list is endless.
  • it's bad bad bad, but it's too late to do anything about it. football sold it's soul years ago I'm afraid ......... but we all still go of course!

Not for much longer I don't think. I've said it a lot in the past four years, this season I think I mean it - I'm not going next year. This is the first year I've not had a season ticket in 15 years. I nearly didn't bother going against Reading, haven't been to a cup game in three seasons and have only been to a handful of away matches in the same period.

There are so many things about modern football, and, more specifically, modern Charlton, that sicken me. I rarely watch a game on telly now - other than Barca every week (thanks for that at least Sky!), can count on the fingers of one knee the amount of times I've watched MOTD in the last three years and intensely dislike being mugged off to the tune of about forty quid every time I go to the Valley.

In short, bollocks to modern football.

And the most telling thing is that in 12 whole hours, no-ne has put a comeback to any of Leroy's arguments. I make you right Leroy.
  • Except that every year there will always be people that say they have fallen out of love with it, not enjoying it etc

That's just the way it goes. The same thing would of happened if the internet was around in the 60s, 70s or 80s, except that looking at the crowds, not so many were going to games then.

30 million times the turnstiles clicked at the 92 league clubs in 07/08, the highest for 40 years.
  • I agree with the spirit of Leroys argument but I take a slightly different position. I also don't watch match of the day, I rarely watch football on TV simply because I don't enjoy it and I can't stand football pundits. I keep an eye on FC Cologne results but other than that the only football I watch is Charlton at the Valley.

I regard the season ticket at the Valley as good value although I have stopped spending any more than necessary simply because everything apart from the Charlton season ticket is hideously overpriced. I still enjoy going to matches, I support Charlton, not football. In fact this year I'm making a concerted effort to go to as many away games as possible.

For me the spirit of the game has been swallowed up by Sky, the premiership and the soulessness of the game embodied by the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Man U. It was nice to see Hull get promoted but I'd like to see how the fans feel about the experience once one multi-millionaire after another has pumped another 20 goals past them this season

bad for football on all levels

how can it be good that only 5 teams can compete to win something

what are the others there for have a league of 5 and let them play each other.

salary capping is the only way to bring it back down to earth or do it the egg chasing way where wages can not be more than x % of what your club generates,

what are the over paid footballers going to do if you did

not play anymore so what the new ones who come through wont be any less talented because the are not paid as much they will just be more grounded

football will eat itself and implode otherwise this can not continue
  • spot on post Nth londude
  • The fight at the top should be interesting, think Arsenal will be OK as they have a new Stadium packed every week playing great football. The team with everything to worry about are Liverpool the New Ground shelved again, Boardroom upheaval & approximately £50M in debt allegedly, they CANNOT afford to miss out on the Chumpions League places, if they do Torres will be Sold to City for £50M at the end of this Season LOCKED ON.

    thanks ol

it is getting on my titts this premier league is the best league in the

world when are these stoopid mancs and chelski divs going to work it out that it is not good and should any one of their backers have enough of his toy realise that their club will cease to exist.

Something doesnt smell right with the Citeeh takeover IMO i dont now why but i am sceptical

of all the clubs Citeeh fans should realise how wrong it can go if it went wrong this time they really would be doomed

Liverpool will only become contenders if DIC take them over which is the brother in law of the main money man at citeh and is Sheik Mohammed

it will all end in tears IMO
  • "it will all end in tears IMO"

Unfortunately I think that is wishful thinking. Part of actually wants it to end in tears but the only way that will happen is if there is a war/massive global recession/the price drops out of the arse of oil.
  • VFR

it only wont happen if every team gets a billionare

if we were to think about it what would be the point of the prem if you can not compete for a european place

if you have such a monoply on the top 6 finishing and FA cup that just leaves the carling cup to reach europe now imo

the top of the prem could look like this

    1 man yoo
    2 Man Citeh
    3 Chelski
    4 Arsenal
    5 Liverpool
    6 Villa
    7 Spuds

now out of those 7 you could argue that places 6 and 7 are worth fighting for which is agreeable however how much would it cost to reach those places 100 million perhaps.

i am sure that the Spuds must have spent that by now and still got no higher,

is the Uefa cup worth 100 million is it heck,

so why would you try to compete you would need to spend double that to get into the top 4 and those taht are there if they saw you trying to do that they could all just pay more and by the players you are after.

there is only one way it will go then after that the backers of the smaller clubs will not risk their money as there would be no point

so effectively you would have people spending just enough to compete to stay in the league but that would cost bucket loads for players not really that good and if it went wrong you would have 3 teams each year on the verge of bankrupcy,

Do you think Stoke can maintain the spending that they are currently doing, or hull and if they drop what will happen, Sunderland spent 20 million in the prem to finish where exactly 13th or 14th can that be maintained i think not that money was surely given to them to get into europe and is clearly not going to be enough.

It has to come to an end i dont mean tomorrow or next year but it will happen or the top 6 will have to break away which will then make the league less valuable and the money will fall out making the teams that have spent big in a vunerable situation also
  • From what I have read, Thaksin has not sold his full complement of shares in the club. Does anyone know whether this is correct?

I'd also like to know if he has paid any tax on the sale! (Probably not as I suspect he sold at the same or a loss).

They are a team with a reasonably well known name outside of the UK so they are a good prospect for takeover by the Abu Dhabi lot.
