Buffering

I have just tried to watch the highlights from Saturday on Virgin but it was virtualy impossible because of buffering problems.
How does one improve or eradicate this problem....indeed I often get it when watching all sorts of movie clips and videos etc.
Is there something I can do or is it a server/website problem or something else?
Warning...I'm not very pooter literate!

Simplest thing to do is pause the clip when it starts, go get a beverage/make a sarnie, etc. Then when the clip's fully buffered you can watch it pause-free.
