Wii, XBox or Playstation

My daughter wants a games machine for Christmas.

She thinks she wants the Wii but only because a friend has one; she has never played the other products. Any tips? If it is the Wii, what extra bits do I need to get with the main box?

Thanks.

Depending on how old your daughter is...If young, then definately a Wii. Plenty of good games to keep her entertained such as Wii Fit, Mario Kart, Koronpia, Monkey Ball...The others are more "hardcore" games machines & don't compare with the Wii as far as titles are concerned for the younger audiences.

Unless she is hardcore then get a PS3 with Call of Duty 4. Its amaaaaaaazing!
  • Wii

Plenty of deals, make sure you get at least two controllers and nunchucks. Graphics not as good as 360 or PS3 but they way you control games gives it the edge (imo) - My two (boys 10 and 5) love it. Play on-line with their friends at weekends. I've got a couple of "adult" games - Call of Duty and House of the Dead.

Would love a 360 myself, but cannot justify one as I play on the Wii all the time!
  • At least with some of the Wii games they exercise more than just thier thumbs. The DS, if she hasn't got on, is small and portable (can be taken in cars or upstairs).
  • bdl got wii and the normal games...but always thought call of duty would be a bit naff compared with xbox saying that never seen the wii version...is it hard to control and use....? as woulnt mind a few shooting games...
  • Wii!

we've recently got Mario Kart and we're obsessed with it! also got wii fit, wii play and wii sports. great for nights in with mates of all ages. the wii fit balance games will have everyone in stitches all night.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!?! Call of Duty? Naff? It's too good to be on the Wii, the processor & graphics can't handle it. Not COD4 anyway.

Def go for a Wii mate. Plus, you can buy yourself Manhunt 2 now kill people in the most brutal ways possible. Great game.

My daughter is 10 so it looks like the Wii.

What are the " nunchucks" - do these come packed with the controllers?

Any idea where best deals might be found?

    Great game.

I do fancy a "shoot em up" myself. Also whats FIFA 08/09 like on a Wii??

Problem I can see is that I won't get near my plasma to watch the footie!!!

With the Wii you get Wii Sports, a controller and a nunchuck as the basic package. With the game Wii Play you get a free controller, you'd have to buy the Nunchuck seperately mind. The Nunchucks plug into the main remote, have a joystick type thing (what you see on a ps3, xbox), plus another button. You'll need it for a lot of games.

Fifa is ok on the Wii, pro evo is a lot better though. The way it works with the controllers is a tad complicated at first but after a while once used to it, its bloooomin quality. Metroid Prime Corruption is a great first person shooter for the Wii, I highly recommend that.

Theres also a very fun game called Rayman Raving Rabbits or something. Loads of "mini games", a bit like Wii Play but more.

The one I got came with one controller and one nun chuck and wii sports. I bought wii play and a controller. wii fit came with the wii board, and then we recently bought wii kart which came with one wheel and then bought an extra wheel.
I think if you can get a good deal for her actual birthday for a wii with wii play with 2 controllers then that would be good as the idea of wii play is to get you used to the controls, you can then add everything else on. No idea on price as mine was a present.

Blimey BDL i thought for a moment then that they nicked my idea for 'wii porn', you know you'd get a blowup doll type thing that links to the console, you'd acrew points for how long you last etc!!

Must get onto that patent office!!

Too late now Olly, my application has gone. You snooze, you lose!

I did see something in Nuts for the "adult" industry. It came with four very playful rabbits that you controlled, looked like fun.
  • Playful rabbits, sure you'd have to have some sort of fetish for rabbits?? no??
  • by the way polo if the wii porn thing comes off (scuse the pun) your weighing me in buddy lol
  • Well, I've got no use for them. Maybe it was a game for the ladies as it was the plastic kind.
  • Oh i see!! I'll tell me mrs!! xmas pressie!!
  • Wii 100% Playstation is aimed at gents and hardcore gamers. However blueray drive.....would look good on your HD TV? hidden agenda and all that
  • MCS - How I stopped myself spluttering my dinner all over the screen! You're a very naughty boy!
  • So my Mrs reckons!! lol

  • I have all 3 and xbox doesn't get a look in any more

    Ps3 rocks for gameplay

Wii is just addictive and "pick up and play"

For a young-un the Wii is deffo best bet for now
  • prob wii for the little un....

PS3 is the dogs... and FIFA is more addictive than crack cocaine...
  • If her friends have a Wii then there is an advantage of sharing games.

On the question of DS lites, has anyone here used an R4,its a gizmo that allows you to down load from the internet games for free on to your pC convert them to a card which you can use in your DSL. Just been given one but not tried it yet, any hints or websites?

Got one recently with a 4 gb micro sd card, can't get it to work, found a website that says the biggest card it will work with is a 2 gb. Have ordered one and am waiting for it to be arrive. I was given a drive with about 100 games on it, all I heard is when can I play with those new games.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions. Wii it is.

one final question - how does the Wii connect to the TV. Is it via an HDMI lead or scart etc?? hopefully its via one of these which I put in truncking in the wall.

sounds interesting. What's a DSL and do I need lots of extra kit for my PC. And how much does it all cost?
  • DSL = Nintendo ds lite £90 ish
R4 is a games cartridge that a mirco sd card £ 30 ish, you can then download games for the dsl and store them on the card. If you a new pc, you should be able to insert the mirco sd / sd card into it and then copy the games onto it.
