Curbs backed to be new Charlton boss

Bookmakers Victor Chandler report a plunge of bets this morning on Alan Curbishley to be the next Charlton Athletic manager, and it has forced the firm to temporarily suspend betting on the market.

“This took us a little by surprise.” said VC spokesman Neal Wilkins. “We were 9/1 this morning and we started to get plenty of bets all at once. We slashed his price to 4/1, but that didn’t put people off, and we had another plunge on that price. We had no option but to suspend betting. It was a significant gamble.”

This happened yesterday. It's in the Racing Post as well.

Don't really understand the betting market.

Do these plunges regularly result in the bet coming off?

Also, when is Curbs' dispute with West Ham due to be resolved?

Just wondered if Richard Murray's 'strategic review' in January was to buy time for Curbs to return??

I'm sure this has been mentioned elsewhere but if Curbs doesn't get the Sunderland job then i don't see what prem job he's likely to get. Blackburn and Sunderland would be about the level of club looking to get him but as we know with Blackburn, Allardyce went there. He's not going to a top 4 club nor Villa, Everton, Spurs, Newcastle, Man City or West ham so where will he go?

About the only thing I can say here is that Curbs is most likely to want to stay in and around the London area....IMHO that is.

my, now in the distant past, experience of these sorts of betting markets is that is generally doesn't take much to spook the bookies and get them to suspend the betting.

The probably haven't had many bets at all and this would mean the impact of even a small 'flurry' of bets could be enough to make them think someone was in the know and stop taking any more bets.

I bet Len Glover is having Kittens at the moment & Is about to Replace his Kish picture with a Curbs one in his Bedroom.

has to be something dodgey going on this late in the day, although I guess Parkys results and Curbs being next front runner might be something to do with it?

As someone said previously the odds change when money is going on. Why is money now going on Curbs for Charlton ?

    2 possible explanations :-

    1. Inside knowledge.

    2. Knowing that Curbs had said he wasn't interested in the Sunderland job, then Blackburn was the only alternative. Now that's gone, it's Charlton or no job.

I reckon it's number 2 but I'm not expecting a return because surely it would have already happened. Unless of course both parties were happy to wait for a while to see what happened, up until now. IE Charlton no wins and Curbs no better job offer.

TBF I could start a rumour on here that Steve Clarke is going to be the new man, and then within hours you would see the bookies odds drop for him.

unless it's because of the WetSpam compensation issue. I was one who wanted Curbs to go but I'd probably accept him back now although I'd rather it were someone else. I hold him in high regard because what he achieved before was phenomenal. Problem is I can't see him repeating it and if he fails that will be what he is remembered for. Returns never really work out, Walker at Norwich, Kendall at Everton spring immediately to mind.

When did he state he wasnt interested in Sunderland, and did it corespond with the flash of bets?

must admit I've not seen him say he's not interested in Sunderland. However, heard some murmering's that a couple of senior pro's at the Stadium of Plight had reccommended Pards to Niall Quinn including his good mate Anton Ferdinand.

McCartney, Reid and Ferdinand all played under Pardew. Never say Never.

Back to the Curbs thring is that the bookies have probably taken a grand tops in recent days on Curbs coming back to the valley, and they have macaronney their pants over it, hence suspend any more bets for now. Would not read to much more into this for now.

I was told a couple of weeks ago that Curbs would be back 1st week in January with Dean Keily returning too. Didn't put much store in this but with this betting news and parky being put in charge till beginning of Jan who knows.

Whatever rumour that is banded around about us we are easy prey at the mo, so take these things with a pinch of salt and don't get too excited over some sudden shortcut to sorting this club out.

He was, that's correct. But he did play under Pards as that quote says!
