Just seen this on their message board while looking for news about Soares...weird:

"Charlton are preparing for relegation and are desperate to reduce the wage bill.
Nicky Weaver is / was on £22,000 per week, Ambrose not far behind nor Gray. To get somebody off the wages for only month helps them enormously. Ambrose is only back there because nobody else will pick up the tab.
I know a first team regular there, who is on a basic of 'only' £1,400 per week and £3,000 per game appearance money. No bonuses if dropped, injured or suspended.
£1,400 ow is only just over £70,000 per year, hardly a kings ransom by footballing standards. "

There is absolutely no way Weaver is 22k, nor Gray anywhere near it (divide by at least 2 I would suggest). Ambrose could conceivably be on a big wage.

Wouldn't surprise me if someone like Rob Elliot was "only" £70k/year basic. He's been number 2/3 keeper for the last year or so until he broke into the team, so can't see how he would be on any more than that. Of course if he were to nail down the number 1 spot then obviously his agent would be keen to renegotiate.

    Who could that be? Elliot?

Lloyd Sam last signed a new contract when Dowie came in, but he's surely on more than that?
  • Yeah I do. I'd play for free let alone £70k a year...which I don't believe for one moment.

That's rubbish. Would you really play for free if that was your job? How would you survive and get by in life with no income?!!

In fact, I used to play for free.

But only because nobody thought I was worth paying.

    ;o)
  • Shorthand secretary on 70K? Not for long in these economic times? What do they pay the bog cleaner, 50K per year? She doesn't work for Lehman Brothers does she?

    Short ass classes!

And bear in mind, professional sportsman is pretty much a 24-7 job in terms of keeping yourself fit, trying not to trip on stairs on an evening out, ect ect. Given that a professional football career is only for 15 years at best, someone earning 70k pa over that career is on the equivalent of about 26k for a more traditional (40 year long) career. 26k is the current average UK salary. Ergo, said player is on the averagest of average salaries, yet (potentially) in the public eye with tens of thousands of people hounding him when he messes up. I don't begrudge whoever it is what they earn. Do you?

feck off 70k is crap by london standards.I find that phrase alone insulting.

would love to hear from some of you who work in recruitment what a good PA with shorthand would get in a top London office.

I know good PA can get a tidy whack but they do a lot more then take shorthand.

70k pa for a 18 year old playing reserve team football mostly.

I bet all their mates at school/uni or working on building sites/offices are laughing at them and giving handouts to help them get by.

My pals ex wife was/is a PA for a South African diamond importer in Trafalgar Square, she wouldn't have got out of bed for 70k, they can earn some serious money, but they do a hell of a lot more than shorthand, almost 2nd wives who run their lives for them, but she was very well rewarded financially and freebies.
