Former British and Commonwealth light heavyweight Champion has died of pneumonia, aged 64. Remember him as a tigerish fighter who never gave up. Finally out fought by John Conteh if memory serves aright. Also won the EBU title, I believe. R.I.P.
I remember him winning GB's only Boxing gold at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. He was a Middleweight then if I remember rightly but switched to light heavy after turning pro. He was a world class fighter and was only foiled from becoming world champion (back in the days that there was only one!) by Bob Foster who was an extremely talented American. He cleaned up Europe and the Commonwealth.
Chris liked his guinness (possibly part of the reason he switched to light heavy) and was often seen around New Cross back in the day.
