Was There a Bus or They Just Plain Mad in Southend?

Southend mate of mine swears that the last time he was at The Valley in about 1976, there was an old bus parked inside the ground (at the top of the East Terrace he reckons...or as he said "at the top of that f*cking great big bit where the ITV cameras were") To you older members....is he talking bollox? It sounds like the sort of useless artifact that could have been kicking about at the ground because it was a bit of an odd place at times. The first time I went there I remember coming through the turnstile, having to walk over that odd hillock thing and through a makeshift goalmouth...which I found a little unusual. Thereafter I got to know the club a bit better....and nothing has surprised me since!

That was the control room for the TV people - no boxes in those days. Full of Tv's etc. (all the feeds went to it)

Only for 'Big Match' televised matches - and Brian Moore in sheepskin jacket and big headphones, on a hastily erected rickety scaffolding slap bang in the middle of the old East terrace.

I don't remember it like a conventional bus, more like a long motor home type vehicle with no windows along much of the sides,
painted white with a thick horizontal navy blue/black stripe along the length of the sides with LWT insignia.

I'm sure Adam can come up with a picture ....?

Did Brian Moore get to drive it to the games too? His own company car.

For you younger fans, LWT = London Weekend Television, who showed the Sunday afternoon 'Big Match' highlights back in the 70's.

The LWT Big Match Revisited is running on ITV4 at the moment - great memories. This weeks game was a full blooded 2-2 draw at a packed to the rafters Maine Road in the FA Cup Semi-Final between Man Utd & LIverpool. Not a foreign player in site - unless you count Gary Bailey & Jimmy Nicholl.

Football has changed so, so much since those days.

My claim to fame = I shared the same milkman as Brian Moore in the 1970's .......(!)

He had a luxury home at Farnborough Park, the 'jewels of Kent' as we called it, hollowed out of the woods at Locksbottom.
I lived in a little 200 year old tumbledown cottage at the bottom of the hill, off the A21 behind the bus garage at the nether end of Bromley Common.

There was a pig farm at the bottom of the road and sometimes it didn't 'alf pong .....

And what about the high point of high points of the Big Match when Killer won the Golden Goal competition! You're right Oggy, it wasn't a conventional or converted bus, if it had been I'd have written the number down in my little book! From a distance though, it could well have looked like one.

I met Brian Moore and I think it must have been at 'Robbo meets the Ref'! Anyone remember that? He was such a nice bloke.

For an extra brownie point, Oggie, can you name the ITV highlights show that pre-dated The Big Match and was hosted by Peter Lorenzo (Matt's dad!)?

My dad-in-law was a mate of Peter Lorenzo, he remembers Matt when he was... ohh... that high.
