They mistyped it and sent pwned and this has since snowballed. It is part of a thing called l33t (pronounced leet) which is itself an abbreviated version of elite - meaning the upper echelons of online gameplay and this is where you get all the geekery of words with letters in them and pictures in ASCII code
sad and geeky but something I picked up whilst doing an open university course.
