Things you never knew about Wycombe

Robert Lee used to play for them

They make a lot of chairs up there.

It's not near West Wickham or Wickham Lane.

They are only one of two league sides with quartered shirts

The low point of my following Charlton was losing at home to WWFC. Worst display ever.

Famous as being a legendary interview question to Bobby Charlton: "Bobby, why comb over when we can still see the shiny stuff anyway?"

Wycombe is the only large town in the UK without a public house.

Local licensing laws mean that all drinking establishments are registered as hotels and must offer at least one room for B & B

They have a 100% record against Charlton in cup games and have never lost to us in the league.

Adams Park is at the end of a cul-de-sac. Don't park close if you want to get away quick.

The word Wycombe derives from the old English saying of Why Come?, as the town has a terrible reputation, and is generally unwelcoming.

Admittedly not everyone's cuppa, but Benjamin Disraeli lived at Hughenden Manor in High Wycombe. He so much loved the Black Forest in Germany that he had created his own German forest in the grounds of his manor. Now a National Trust property and it looks really interesting. Also discovered that Torres once played for Wycombe, but his first name was Sergio. Museum houses the first ever designed 'upside down' chair, which could be turned upside down when it rained.

The team added the 'wanderers' to their name back in 1977 as a joke. The team employed local coach driver and big wycombe fan, Clive Blent, to drive the team bus for the season. Unfortunately due to a strange incident involving some tiles and an earthworm Clive had the worst sense of direction known to man. During that season the team were almost relegated due to forfeiting games where they failed to arrived on time or at all. On one memorable occasions Clive delivered them on time to the ground of Altrincham. It was 20 minutes into the game before people realised Wycombe were actually meant to be several hundred miles further north at Alnwick.

The town of Looe in Cornwall is the capital of Byrmingham - at least in August
  • In 1923-24 Charlton wore striped shirts in similar colours to the quarters of Wycombe.
