Steven Pressley

Could he be our saviour?

Would he consider joining us or is this an unrealistic shout?

The lure of English Premiership football - and the mammoth task of helping Charlton Athletic avoid relegation - could be enough to prevent ex-Hearts skipper Steven Pressley signing for Celtic.

While there is still no official word about where the 33-year-old defender will be playing in January following his falling-out with the powers-that-be at Tynecastle, the latest suggestion in the ever-changing rumour-mill is that Charlton have offered Pressley a lot more money.

The report in The Herald also suggests that Newcastle are interested and, while Pressley could sign a deal with the Hoops, he would do so without the guarantee of regular first-team football.

Without being too rude, a move to Charlton would be surprising, although perhaps logical. Having just been knocked-out of the Carling Cup by the mighty Wycombe Wanderers, former home of Martin O'Neill, it looks like their season will be one of disaster.

Currently 19th in the Premiership and five points from safety, not to mention under he management of someone who doesn't really seem to have what it takes, Charlton look a good bet to go down this season. But perhaps that is where the temptation lies for Pressley.

At 33, he knows he is approaching the end of his career (well, he's still seven years younger than Craig Brewster...!) and, instead of ending it with the problems with Hearts in everybody's minds, perhaps he wants to be the saviour of Charlton rather than a bit-part player in Celtic's SPL-winning side.

If he doesn't move to Celtic, there is a chance that Aberdeen skipper Russell Anderson will move to Parkhead. Although movement of a more likely nature is of the other direction - and Bobo Balde reuniting with O'Neill at Aston Villa.

Not a bad few twists for a 33-year-old who splits opinion and is not even with a club, though...
