In the 19th century High Wycombe was the furniture makers capital of the world
  • Same way as Northampton Town are known as the Cobblers - traditional shoe making industry in Northampton.

Luton Town - the Hatters. Used to be a big hat making industry in Luton.

Were Millwall called 'The Spanners' because of the large amount of tools in the Bermondsey area?
  • Does not explain palarse being called "spotty, scummy, nigel tosspots" does it?

Not sure that Monkey Hanging is an Industry ?
They probably make monkey hangers t-shirts and what not up there and have tours of when the monkey was kept etc. I mean there's fuck all else to do in Hartlepool!
  • Other industry related footie nicknames:

    Burton Albion - Brewers
Grimsby - The Cod Heads - which gives me an excuse to mention one of the best footie websites ever: www.codalmighty.com
    Stockport County - Hatters
    Yeovil - Glovers
    Crewe - Railwaymen
    Macclesfield - silkmen

I have it good on authority that they have a booming industry in binge drinking and car thefts.
  • Reading used to be known as 'The Biscuitmen' because there was a big biscuit factory in the town.

Much better nickname than 'The Royals' anyway!
  • How could you all forget "The Spanners"

Wikipedia...... "The Spanners" who got their nickname in the early 20th century after discovering you could try to kill someone using a 17mm combination spanner, Hence as mad as "A Spanner" not to be confused with a spanner..... something used be an engineer ;)
    "Spannerette"........ female Spanner
"6mm/ 8mm combinations"............... male or female junior spanners
  • The Pirates=Bristol Rovers ?
  • ''The club's official nickname is The Pirates, reflecting the maritime history of Bristol. The local nickname of the club is The Gas, from the gasworks next to Eastville Stadium, their former home''
  • Charlton = the 'Addicks, because there was always something fishy going on with the published attendances under the Glikstens.
