Phillips Idowu

Well done fella. My old event (I believe I'm still my school's record holder!) so always holds a special place in my affections. Knocking on the door for so many years - always the bridesmaid, never the bride! Not any more - hearty congratulations, and it couldn't happen to a nicer bloke as well.

  • Really? Thats magnificent! Well done that man!
  • Well done, he got a silver at the Beijing Olympics, there was the suggestion that under pressure he was a bit suspect, so good to both win and prove the critics wrong.
  • Hop, Skip and Jump! To me they were Enid Blyton's Brownies. Well done. Now try something worth winning.
  • i take your point chirpy, i think there should be a 3 legged race too though.
  • My Mates son Mathew Burton is one of the leading youth triple jumpers and is a training partner of Idowu - watch out for him - a medal hope for 2016
  • got to say that the triple takes a lot more skill than the long jump in terms of coordination

Really pleased for Phillips after his disappointment at the olympics , top bloke who's a natural winner
  • Always thought his name was Phillip Sidowu!!

Ahhhhh - that's more like it Chirpy. After two tacit agreements in as many weeks, I can go back to thinking you're a clueless know-nothing again. The world makes sense once more :o)

If you'd ever actually got off your arse and tried the triple jump you'd realise how difficult it is - how badly it can damage your knees and ankles - and why Jonathan Edwards is one of the greatest sportsmen this country has ever produced. My school produced some pretty good athletes - including three or four kids who ran under 10.8 seconds for the 100m, and a kid in my own class who jumped 7m in the long jump - but none of them could ever work out how to do the triple jump. Which is why my 13.8 still (to my knowledge) stands as my school record. The event cobines speed with precision and technical proficiency - getting the three phases right takes a ridiculous amount of practice, concentration and leg strength - and there are some pretty bad injuries in the event. In the four years I did it I had a dislocated ankle, partially torn MCL, numerous cartilage injuries and a torn calf that stopped me being able to walk for two months.

Phillips Idowu - I - and anyone else who isn't just posting here on a wind-up - salute you
  • Delighted that he beat the Portuguese bloke. Well done sir!

  • The triple jump is one of my fav events. It's nice to see Phillips Idowu carrying on from where Edwards left off.
