just wondering, if the 'attendance' is actually tickets sold, why does it take until towards the end of the match for them to announce it? surely they know what the attendance is about 5 minutes after kick-off, as the computer will tell them how many tickets they've sold, no counting needs to take place? or do they just do it then because that's when they've always done it?

I'd guess so that the figure includes any late comers.

I think Rick will be able to confirm but I believe that the turnstiles aren't closed until half-time.

I'm usually told of the attendance about 10-15 mins into the second half.

I think Dave is right. Certainly we would still sell tickets after kick-off and in any case it's not just a question of pressing a button as the system doesn't work like that - for example it would count a car-parking place and a coach seat as a ticket and these need to be knocked off the total.

In any case, it's not the first priority during the game. Cash has to be reconciled and any anomalies there could affect the attendance by highlighting an error.
