Redundancy..... Today!!!!

edited September 2009 in Not Sports Related
...our contract was taken over by another company 2 months ago, we have been under review since then...just been to a meeting and have been told the amount I will be 'awarded' should the inevitable happen, will know in about 10 days, have been whispered that its 70% certain....so if anyone needs a design studio manager with nearly 30 years design and print expereince and is a god with all the major design packages then send me a whisper.

Cheers

Good luck...but forewarned is forearmed. Get your CV in order, start talking to agencies etc and get the ball rolling.

Good Luck - be wary if you get any "payments in lieu of notice" you can be taxed on this, depending on how your contract is worded; companies often opt for the easy option of deducting tax without looking into the legal position.

Good luck mate, been out of work since may now after being made redundant, it can be tough at times but u have to keep you're head up mate.

If you are potentially losing your job because the contract has been transferred to another company - then legally you might have some rights to be transferred to that other company with the contract. This is called TUPE (transfer of undertakings - employee protection). Here is a link that explains it: http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/employment/trade-union-rights/tupe/page16289.html . It may not apply and the company taking the contract over may not want to employee you - but its worth asking - legally they may have to. Similar thing happened to my brother last year and he mentioned TUPE and the company taking over the contract significantly increased the redundancy payout he got - so they didn't have to employee him! Not what's supposed to happen - but he was happy with the extra money. Might be worth looking into.

Just purely out of curiosity what agency did you work for mate? (im in the same industry)

Work at a massive world bank at Canary Wharf in the design studio, Xerox had the contract but lost to another company, we all TUPE'd over, they have just had due dilligence so its bye bye. I cant mention on here where and who is going to do the work (Ali's thriller fight)....another spanner in the works is that I am just short of 2 years employment so no redundancy payments!!
A bit of a kick in the nuts, but there you go!!!

Bibble, are you full time? I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure you only need to have been employed for 12 months now to qualify for redundancy. I suppose it's too much to hope that you're in a union? If not, get yourself down the CAB sharpish...

I just got my tax back from my PILON! Think it is up to the company to request though. Good luck. Took me 13 interviews to get my job. But it is picking up and people are hiring more now.

As someone mentioned earlier, you are probably covered by TUPE laws as the contract has been taken over by another provider. When it went out to tender the bidders would have been made aware of the TUPE implications and it is well known in the FM industry as it is always happening. I think TUPE applies after 12 months employment and they may have to retain you doing the same work for the same employment terms as your current contract, as long as the delivery of the service is not fundamentally different from what you currently do. Well worth looking into.

They are making the whole team redundant, bloody banks.
We have been told to clear our desks, we have a meeting in 30 mins then escorted out the building!!

On a happy note, "We are top of the league, we are top of the league"

    Cheers

Bibble one bit of advice - turn off Charlton Life!!!!

But seriously, for independent advice give ACAS a ring

    http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1410

A lot of people think they are just for industrial disputes, they will also give individual advice.

Start networking, don't rely on agencies, they have lots of people on their books at the moment. let friends, family, people you have worked with know you are available.

Work on your CV and bounce it off people for constructive criticism, it is also a way to get to see people, asking them not for a job but for advice on how you construct your CV.

    Good luck.

In the same game as yourself bibble and if I hear of anything will wisper you.....

My company are yet again 'reviewing the structure' I just thank god that I only have 2 years to go before retirement, having faced redundancy twice before it is a position I do not relish anyone.

The media industry has always been open to flutuations of the economy, and unless you are a head of department by 40 where I work you are either a security guard, or working casual.
Not against young people at all, my sons who are 21 this week have had a torrid time re work in the building game. But they still have jobs, although one had to change a few months back having just passed his apprenticeship. How the country benefits from laying off newly qualified people is a mystery to me..........

    All,

Thanks for all the help and advice.

I'm on gardening leave for a month until all the paperwork is sorted ouit so am using the time to push up my profile.

The whole design team have been elbowed. The bank has taken all the work to the Far East, so from a team of 60 the UK side will be left with about 10 and these are just in the digital printroom, well I guess it is the worlds local bank!!!

Tel - ta for the contact.

    Cheers again.

One of the reason's I try and be more than a 'mac jockey', because there is always someone somewhere that will do it 'cheaper'!.
The same thing happened to book publishing in the mid 80s, went to Hong Kong, and the far east.

That is why I have got back into photography, at least it is 'creative' and with photoshop there is a whole new world out there.

Went on a course for advanced adobe in design in June for a week , great but you realise that there are people doing this job now who have no formal training or been anywhere near an art school.
That is why they end up being excellent knowing 10 percent of the job and clueless about the rest of it, no idea of budget's or print/ repro and so on, and are of no use to most studios.......

Cheap print job's are only cheap when they are correct and good quality,.... and if client's do not understand that I tend to find you are wasting your time, because the bottom line is how 'cheap is it!' .
