During a severe bout of the plague during the reign of Henry viii, the surviving members of the town of Eter were moved 15 miles north, and spawned the name Ex-Eter.
Exeter City FC went into the 1921/2 season high on confidence as their opening fixture was against unknown league new comers Charlton Athletic from east London.
However City were defeated 1 - 0 in what is still one of the major upsets in world football

I wonder if we'll ever play them again?
Never. we had 13k at the Valley for that game but two weeks later there were only 7k at Exeter.
In 1906, inside half Joseph "Daisy" Wolstenholme faced the indignity of only being allowed to play home games. Do to his ungainly features and unusual frame, strong rumours circulated in football circle that he was in fact half man / half Devon cow, and the government sanctioned a ban forbidding him from leaving the county for fear of frightening others.
Joseph only featured for one season, and only in games blessed with fine weather after two incidents of him ignoring the ball and laying down on the pitch as rain clouds approached.
cases of families in Exeter have the same person as parent and sibling are very rare but this will not prevent some Charlton fans suggesting that it is a common occurrence in that part of the world.

And what do you know .... Exmouth is a town situated by the mouth of the River Exe.
It even has it's very own branch railway line that goes to ........ Exeter.
Exeter had a steam locomotive named after the city called, er, Exeter. It was a West Country Class 4-6-2 built in 1945 and re-built in 1957 with Walschaerts valve gear.It was withdrawn from service with SR in 1967.
The club is nicknamed The Grecians. This name has a disputed history, with many theories being proposed for its origin. No one is sure of the definitive answer to why but one source suggests that the club voted for the name in 1908 because of its association with St Sidwells parish.[9] People living in the parish of St Sidwells in Exeter have been known as "Greeks" or "Grecians" for many centuries.[10] This is possibly due to the parish's location outside the city walls. In Homer's epic poem Iliad the Greek forces laid siege to the walls of Troy. The association possibly arrose because of rivalries between city boys and St Sidwellians during the annual beating the bounds.[11] It has also been suggested that there was a group of children in St Sidwells who were referred to as the 'Greasy Un's' and another possible, but unlikely source for the name was from clock that hung outside a jeweller's shop in Sidwell Street, close to the ground, which had the word 'Grecians' engraved or painted on the face. So even then our away support was terrible : - )
Note that this also applies to places like Colchester .... which is pronounced 'Colster' for the same reason.

Good guess, Salad.

And does anyone remember our last match - in the FA Cup (2003/4??) when they turned up with a scantily clad female mascot in Greek costume.
Let's hope she comes again.
It all makes sense now.
Never realised seals lived to such a ripe old age.
