Bicycle repairman required

The rear derailleur cable snapped inside my lever shifter and for the life of me I cannot work out how to repair it. I'm usually quite good at this sort of thing but just can't work it out.

I'm loathed to take my bike to a shop but it seems to be my only choice, can anyone recommend a decent bicycle repair service in South East London, Lewisham or Greenwich area?

  • Bexley Bikes is good for servicing...and Bromley Bike Company
  • Always take mine to wellimg cycles, top blokes in there and very reasonable
  • That should be welling cycles!
  • the cycle team in brockley is awesome. top bloke and knows everything, on the industrial estate in brockley cross, you'll see the signs. he's class.
  • The new Cycle UK shop on Creek Road about 200 yards before Creek Bridge as you go towards Greenwich Town centre. Or the Cycle Warehouse on Trafalgar Road at the top of Blackwall Lane.
  • Ive gone past the one on creek road a few times, that one and the cycle team are the easiest for me to get to (my bike is stuck in top gear) so I'll give them a go. Thanks guys!
  • Wheelies in Northumberland Heath is the best place I've been to. We buy all of our Bikes from there and he does our servicing and repairs at very reasonable rates
  • unscrew the 2 screws that hold the top of the brake/gear lever, lift it off and reveal the broken cable, compare to the other one the other side in how to thread it through.

if you cycle a lot the rear will go fairly more than the rest as it used so much so worth learning how to do it.

Yeah, like I say, I'm usually quite good at working out what to do but I've tried unscrewing the whole gear shifting unit and it doesn't seem to come apart. It's a shimano 8 speed rapid fire gear shifter, one of those push button jobs. It is the rear cable that's gone, maybe I'll give it another go before I resort to the Bicycle repair man!

Been in Cycles UK on Creek Road a few times, not been that impressed with the service in there, but i have no doubt they will be able to help you out.
  • Sidcup Cycles are best for repairs on decent bikes. The old boy in Welling Cycles is great though.

    Support the local independents!!!!

My problem with places like that is that I bought my bike in Halfords. Usually, whenever I take my bike anyway mear a "specialist" bike shop, they look at me as if I've just dragged a decaying corpse into the shop. I'd rather go to a small local place.
  • Have you tried the Shimano manuals?

    Shimano

or the Park Tools website often helps

    Park Tools

You are right. I took my eldests mountain bike into Sidcup and the old boy did exactly that!!

People that work in bike shops, in themain, are miserable gits but dont mind striping you up for your cash!

If you want to go to a shop that loves itself and treats its customers with total distain go to Condor, near Clerkenwell. Some of these places dont know how to treat paying customers.
