1. The name ‘Oldham’ stems from the area where a large horde of rebels from the North were famously captured during the reign of Henry Viii. The mass decapitation of the perceived cowards that followed also derived the term ‘headless chickens’.

2. Following a large oil discovery during the 1910s, the town is referred to by locals as ‘Texas Oldham’

3. Following an injury crisis during the 1980s, a call for players over the Boundary Park tannoy saw local baker Frankie Bunn drafted in from the terraces as he had his boots in the back of his delivery van. Frankie famously scored 6 goals in the 7-0 rout of Scarborough, earning himself a shot term contract. Manager Joe Royle set Frankie a 12-goal target for the season, but the poppy-seed rolls specialist went one better and scored 13.

4. Oldham has historically been famous for textiles, but its industry has suffered in the last 30 years following the demise of the summer head hankie.

5. Winston Churchill began his political career in Oldham, and was elected Parliamentary Representative in the 1900 election.

6. Famous Oldham residents include Humpty Dumpty, Barrack Obama and homage, to our former PM, the Churchill Dog.

7. Oldham is the administrative centre for biros, due to its favourable Pennines position.

8. Local politician Michael Meacher and his brothers lothario antics are so well known, local schools have been known to replace hymns by singing Son of a Meacher Man.

9. Famous Oldham exports have included Cotton Mills, Danny Mills, and ready meals.

10. Oldham is none for being a ‘high density urban area’, which explains why most Oldham residents are thick as two short planks.

10.5. The name Boundary Park was spawned in 1904, when Oldham inside half Earnie Erstwhistle kicked the ball out for a throw in on the full, and referee Harold Whistleblower indicated for a six, before demanding a new ball was used after 80 minutes.

Oldham are one of only two clubs in the Premier League and Football league know as Athletic. The other is Wigan

Oldham are in the process of trying to buy land for a new ground which while technically still in Oldham has a Manchester post code. This is because most people from Oldham wish they were from Manchester anyway.

Paul Scholes supports Oldham and has promised to finish his career there.

Oldham were previously known as Pine Villa which is always worth remembering when doing football quizzes as everyone else will guess Aston Villa

The famous singer and writer of hits such as '007' and 'The Israelites' was born in the Oldham district of Derker, originally named Desmond Higginbottom he changed his name to Desmond Derker after the district in which he was born. later his record company changed his name again to Desmond Dekker, there is some dispute as to whether this is because of the 'decks' on which viny recordings were played, or the infamous incident when Desmond gave the Queen Mother a Glasgow kiss and 'decked her'.

It was famous at one time for its car batteries (remember: 'I told 'em - Oldham), which they tried to improve by making them much smaller and circular but the idea was a non-starter!

Oldham were in the early 20's dubbed 'luddite fc' by the local press after there fans repeatedly tore down the brand new turnstiles installed to allow the club to, for the first time, provide accurate attendance figures.

the problem was resolved by the board agreeing to let a random number of fans in for free at every match. This practise continues to this day with every 1047th fan through the turnstile being given a voucher for a free ticket to the next match of their choosing (cup games exempted)
  • when oldham had a plastic pitch they used a remote control football which they unfamously used to make andy jones miss an open goal from 3 yards out many many moons ago

A true fact FACT is that Peter Hunt scored a goal against Oldham at The Valley in a 4 v 2 win that wasnt a goal. His shot went past the post hit the wall below the Covered End and entered the net from behind. The ref gave a goal.

Former Oldham winger Rick Holden might be a relative of our bright young thing, Luke Holden.

    There again he might not.

Three FACTS. 1/. The cotton tubular bandage was invented in Oldham in 1961.

2/. Oldham is claimed to be the birthplace of the chip shop! In 1900 it had the highest concentration of chip shops in the country: one for every 400 people.

3/. Oldham Mumpers was one of the town's railway stations. Mump is an area of the town and the name is derived from a quaint Lancastrian term for poor people.

Oldham derives its name from the meat markets which used to be held in the town in the mid 6th century. It was known for the poor quality of its meat, which was often sold well beyond its sell by date. In the same way, Newham was so called because of the freshness of its meat. West Ham was so called because its meat markets used to be known for selling meat from the front half of the pig, East Ham was so called because its meat markets used to be known for selling meat from the rear half of the pig, and Peckham was best known for the Trotters.

Oldham's original nickname was The Seasiders due to their close proximity to both the North and Irish Seas.

Boundary Park is the third highest league ground above sea level at 509ft.

Oldham was hit hard by the Lancashire Cotton Famine of 1861–1865 when supplies of cotton ran so short that residents had to start eating food instead.
