Ridiculous. No Casino should be sited in an area where there are large pockets of deprivation, IMHO. It isn't morally right, is it? I'm not against gambling but I think these new Super Casino's should be located in the middle of nowhere.
Disagree Valley. By that argument there should be no pubs or betting shops on areas of deprivation as they are, IMHO, much more likely to attract deprived people's money than an expensive night club style casino.
In fact the deprived are more likely to be working in the casino's in low paid unskilled jobs and that, for me, is the real issue.
I think Supercasinos are plain wrong. What's more we'll have one to start with, but in ten years' time there will be half a dozen.
If there is to be one (and it seems there is) then no point cutting off noses to spite faces so might was well be at the Dome - good for the area (I doubt punters will be predominantly local, but maybe jobs will be) and perhaps even for our football club.
PS VMcM: I would be interested to hear why you think it should be in central Croydon ?

It's more likely that the Super Casino will be staffed with cheap labour from Eastern Europe rather than Greenwich locals, IMO. What are your views on Casino's acting as a magnet for Mafia Gangs, Drug Dealers and Prostitutes? Not to mention money laundering and loan sharks?
This extract from a report just about sums up the situation for me.
'...The full impact of Labour's plans to relax the gambling laws is laid bare in a study prepared by Brent Council, which spells out that local residents can expect their neighbourhood to be blighted by a rise in antisocial behaviour, congestion and traffic noise pollution in the small hours of the morning.
It warns that casinos will cause an explosion in money laundering and loan sharking as criminal gangs use 'violent and threatening means' to prey on newly addicted gamblers.
Problem gambling will leave 'many individuals in significant danger and fear' and drive many to 'dependency on drugs and alcohol' or even 'suicide'. Others will suffer 'depression, stress and anxiety' and 'neglect' their family and children.
The little noticed social impact report is the most comprehensive study yet prepared on the social impact of a supercasino. It draws on 67 other publications published worldwide to provide a chilling warning about what residents can expect.
Brent Council have now abandoned their bid to win a supercasino licence at Wembley after a public backlash, but their conclusions apply just as well to the Millennium Dome or Blackpool, the two frontrunners for the first licence...'
But that would apply to the 100s of casinos we already have in London and the UK. Of course there has to be proper regulation but I fail to see how a supercasino is more likely to attract anti-social behaviour than a night club or pub.
From what I hear it is not difficult to find either drugs or prostitutes in London anyway. Doesn't make it right but a location such as the dome makes it easier to monitor and control.
The "problem gamblers" already have many outlets for their habits. the UK is not like the US where is most states betting is illegal pushing all the activity into a few either mob or native American set-ups. I also think there is an element of protecting the "poor, working classes who can't look after themselves and will spend their dole money on drink and drugs and dogs"
Its a ticking clock this casino thing guys...... the first time I came to Oz was four years ago and there were these massive casinos open to everyone, right of passage for 18 year olds, all that jazz and in every major city in this country, you will find one with a hotel attached and doing very well.... its only a matter of time before they find a way to sell it to the british public and bang they will be everywhere...... no more suits and members only ....... a prove it card and your in....
If it brings jobs to the area and helps with the regeneration then fine, but it must be regulated properly. Also I'd like to see a British company running these places, keep the profits on-shore.
The north is already well served by smaller casino's which have low if any dress codes, one of the few things I enjoyed about living in Liverpool for 4 years was Stanley's Casino on Renshaw Street. Go down with a tenner and get free sandwiches and Coffee all night, and occasionally come home with a few hundred quid made. The South East is not well served by the little Casino's.
I would welcome one at the dome, lets face it the ASB, is already common locally, I see the kids who had scooters 2 years ago, mini moto's last summer have now moved on to cars, the police are in no way in control.

i can't say i agree with some of that?
its like the blighted view that dabbling in drugs occasionaly will mean within weeks you'll be a heroin junkie. we can't molly cuddle the weak because they have addictive personalities surely??
in that case, shut down all pubs/betting shops/lottery/clubs etc? or am i missing your point?
Comparing the glitz and glamour of Super Casino with a betting shop and pub isn't a proper comparison, is it? My point is that, because of the location, the Dome Casino is going to attract the type of person who can least afford to go there. You only have to go to a CAB and ask them about the number of referrals they have in relation to gambling, lottery and scratchcard addiction. IMHO, this will be a blight on the local population. The Casino should be in the middle of nowhere. As SaladSpinner originally said, Croydon would be preferable.
I think Valley is right to a large extent, because these supercasinos know the kind of trouble that they encourage people into and, though we can't moddy coddle weaker people, these places take no responsibility beyond their mandate to make obscene amounts of money. I would not liken them to pubs, and betting shops are problematic, but on a different scale; off the top of my head, I'd liken the kind of impact a super casino has to the kind of problems created by the magazine publishing industry (in fact the entire media) through their irresponsible promotion of stick thin women as the ideal body shape for young women. I don't think that the fashion media take much responsibility for their role in making people's lives miserable on a large scale, which has reverberations throughout society, and I don't think the super casino's do either. That's the problem I have with them.
Luckily for sarf east london, for all of England, even, we have the Charlton Athletic care in the community schemes to see all of these issues right!!! Think of the grant money Valley... We'll be rolling in it!
