Tyre places

edited January 2010 in Not Sports Related
got a bit of a slow puncture on one of my tyres so thought I'd swap it for the spare only the spare is nearly bald on one side . This being the first car I've ever owned I could do with a decent recommendation when it comes to somewhere to go.

I'm in Lee so somewhere not too far would be nice

As is the place in Welling who's name escapes me, between the "Guy" and the "Nags Head"

One piece of advice, stay away from kwik fit! their speciality is relying on people who cant be ar5ed to shop around. Very expensive!!
  • I think that's"One Stop" and they are really good I have found.
  • watling tyres, near the albert and woolwich building in bexleyheath very good.

That's the one, kwik fit quoted "£193" for one of my tyres, I paid £85 at "One Stop"
  • yes SET Tyres in Blackfen are good used to used them a lot.

But found Crayford Tyres excellent, good service and honest opinion and will price match with local companies. So use them.
I use Elite for specialist tyres like sport/alloys etc in Essex, suppply most makes/sizes, not cheap but will get anything that is available...
  • Event mobile tyres are awesome

they come to you and I find their prices are superb / look them up online for a quote

  • I think you've logged in under the wrong username for that one Mick
  • P & S Tyres Baring Road in Lee I use them all the time friendly and cheap as well as being local to you

If you are looking for cheap and dont mind remoulds, the place on Woolwich Rd near the White Horse, will do decent remoulds for £25.00 -£30.00. Always cheaper for cash.

They will also plug repair the puncture if the hole isnt too bad.
  • Grays is close to you and always seem ok to me. Where the world of leather used to be
  • Where the world of leather used to be there is a new 'goals' centre being built opening march 2010 and a big yellow storage opening 2011.

When I got a flat tyre - paddy powell sorted it out but recommendations were for that tyre place on baring road paralell to our house by somerfield pub and for mot's the place down by villamoura/ratchada.

Ditto at the Old Dover Road tyre place just off Shooters Hill Road (cannot remember the name), use it for the last three tyre swaps and slow punctures - only £15 to repair a slow puncture so worth seeing them..
  • So has grays and maplins and the tyle place all gone now!

  • Yep - flattened!
  • Oh nooooo! I liked those shops, maplins was particularly handy.
  • Not sure you've sorted this yet, but Hither Green Tyres are good and cheap, down Hither Green Lane
  • this is all wheely interesting but it's getting tiring now so can we jack it in ?
  • Yep, that place next to The Summerfield is about as good as you'll get near Lee...they're OK and cheap and cheerful.
  • went to the one stop in welling

Really nice guys even though I ended up having to spend £255 getting three tyres replaced , the tyres that needed doing we rear tyres but they swapped the front wheels for the rear to give me better grip in the snow right now.

Not what I wanted to shell out right now but as I said the guys were really helpful and friendly and I'd deffo use them again

I told them to expect you, just popping down to collect my 15% ; )
Seriously, glad you got it sorted and as you say they are very helpful and they did a bit of wheel swapping for me.
  • So...every tyre place in SE London that isn't kwik fit is OK. What i want to know is when I have gone to Kwik Fit they always wangle more out of me for balancing and tracking or whatever that is....what exactly do they do for that, and is it essential? Also if it is essential do the blokes in Baring Road do it too, they are near me, but seem to conduct the whole of their business on the pavement?
Oh another thing, three of my tyres hold their pressure around 32 for the two weeks between checks, but one of em goes down to about 23 each time....is this a 'slow puncture' and can it be repaired or do I need a new tyre?
  • Go to the Baring Road shop - speak to John the tyre man, he will not rip you off.

He would not still be there unless he had a huge loyal client base of folk like me.

Ask him for the total cost upfront - he will not cheat you.

As for the tyre pressure - ask John. It's probably a leaky valve and quite cheap to fix.

    Good Luck.

Never, ever go to a kwik fit, they are shockingly bad with everything not just tyres. Balancing and allignment has to be done once a tyre has been changed and is usually included in the price of the fitting of the tyre.
