Job Help!

Hi, everyone i know i have posted something silly today but for once i thought would try a sensible one..

Basically i am a few months into my new job which some of you are aware that i work for my Mum, what i do is im a business training co-ordinator but really just odds & sods on the face of it. half the time i am there, there is nothing for me to do so get very bored :-(

I have been speaking with my Mum and she also agrees i need to have a serious think about what i want to do and a job i will enjoy, have not put in looking for job as i clearly have a job and would like some advice

as a background, i worked in home insurance since i was 16, up until i think october so 5years+ first year & half was Admin, then home claims advisor and worked out wasn't for me and got in bit of trouble also so walked out luckily found my current job. i used to work shift work 9-5pm never late etc then changed to shift work so anything between 8-8 and changed day to day at some point, but again never late. before that when i left school worked in Tesco home shopping for 8months 6-2pm mon-fri & the odd sunday so it does show unlike nathan i do have a work ethic(sorry NP couldnt resist)

Im gerenally happy working with people but do not know what i wanna do now, in an ideal world i'd love to go travelling but wouldn't really do this on my own

Any advice would be much appreciated, as i want to work somewhere i will look forward to or at the very least a job to keep busy and not get bored

  • You asked Nathan?
  • What about being an air steward?
Plenty of travelling and not bad money, plenty of days off, plenty of women who must be fed up with stewards who bat for the other side!

Thought about going to uni as a mature student? Can study something you're interested in (first 2 years are a walk in the park) and will open up doors to whatever it is you want to do.

Also my best mate just went travelling on his own and he's having a great time. It seems pretty easy to meet people.
  • www.gapyear.com has lots of ideas if you do fancy travelling, as Chunes said it is easy to meet people and generally easy to find work here and there as you go. Also allows time to make the best decision about a job in the UK.
  • Hi JB1987,

I'm around the same age as you i'm guessing by your username.

I went travelling a while ago. I worked in IT as a trainee for a year and a half and then went off travelling for a year at 19. Coming home in a recession, with no real interest in anything apart from wanting to travel again, has led me to drifting from temporary job to job, without having to think to hard about anything serious. Living at home etc means low rent, easy lifestyle bla bla bla. However, after several failed attempts of planning another trip... I am now dithering between going away again and working for a year or two, doing ANY job just to get money. Or doing the sensible thing and going to University as a mature student or getting a trade qualification of some kind. I have NO IDEA what interests me though so its so hard to make a decision.

The hardest thing for me is the one thing that you seem to have and thats commitment. Working in a job for 5+ years shows you can do that. I find it quite scary to commit to a job or a qualification course for 2/3 years, as the whole of my life i've just had a tempoarary work, then whilst travelling done what the hell i liked when i liked and its bloody good fun!

If I had to give you a honest answer it would be GO TRAVEL. But if you want a sensible answer (or as I like to call it a 'Mum answer') its go and study or learn something.

Also, if you do contimplate travel don't worry about doing it alone, you'd be suprised how many people you meet who are in the same boat.

  • You wouldn't of guessed he was the same age by looking at him :-p

I think you are mixing up two separate issues ie career and travelling.

You if just want to earn to save up to travel stay where you are. You have a secure job with a boss who is unlikely to sack you. Make sure you put away a fixed amount via direct debt or similar every month and set a deadline to travel for say 6 months in 15 months time. Agree this with your mum/boss.

That's the easy bit. As for a career you've not really said anything about what you are good at, skills or attributes you have, interests or things that you enjoy. Nearly all jobs involve other people so saying that doesn't help.

You need to find out what you are good at so ask to take on some other roles, not admin, at work. Could be sales, events/training organising (the whole thing not just the admin ie pricing, booking, selling), delivering training, interviewing or something else. Some you will like others you will hate. You have to try them out to see.

But to be brutally honest you need to get outside your comfort zone which is what working for you mum is. Not only does it mean you can never be sure you'd have got the job otherwise others will think the same. You need to take some controlled risks.

BTW what does your company do training wise. I know this really good trainer and business coach who could help you out :- 0 Whisper me a website address.

  • If you want a career and travel why not join the army...?

Plenty of top notch apprenticeships available, you get to travel the globe for free, meet lots of interesting people, help rebuild their lives and shattered dreams and if things don't work out you get to kill them...

  • Right as henry has suggested thought i would say a bit more like my working habbits and the way i am then we can find my perfect job, or a job that actually keeps me busy enough that i dont get bored.

I am a very social person, like to be centre of attentiono, good banter, always the butt of jokes and come out with stupid comments, like to think im funny also :-)

As for working, i am very good on the phone as spent 3 years constantly on the phone so i have good phone manner & when ppl stress i deal with it well. i can do admin also but it bores me hence why i only did for about 1 & 1/2 years before i decided to progress at my previous job
Yes i am always on time, i work better in the mornings for some reason even though im always tired
Can deal with Excel, Word, Powerpoint etc
negatives: I do talk alot and get distracted easily, also Letter writing is not my fortay and have asked both recent jobs whether i could do courses in this and they say yes but never get round to it.

Yes i would love to do travelling and probably wouldn't be afraid to do on my own just would prefer with a mate, i have the funds also so i am seriously going to look into this as wanted to go australia early this year co-incidentally this time last year and was going to start saving, didnt but have the money anyways. im just very family person though so dont know how i would cope with that? but i'd get through it

Really just wanted opinions of what job would suit my personality? Air Steward sounds like it would be fun, was going to say dont you have to be gay to do that? lol

That is exactly why I'm 3 weeks away from leaving IT and starting training as a student paramedic...

Definately not the army type, im not really the practical type either eg. manual labour

No mate, only for the drinking. school wasn't for me so dont think i would last, also not really got grades etc to go uni although would of been fun :-)

The 'student' part is a bit misleading... I'll still be out and about scooping up the pissheads off the streets... I'm certainly not in Stu's league...
  • Facebook suggestions as i put on my status.....

Ferret Tickler, couple of saying to audition for BB- although did this previously and didn't get in a couple of years ago, also BB is sort of out-dated now so wouldn't see the point

did get few other silly suggestions but thats why i also put on here because i knew i would get some good responses

    This excluded though ;-)
  • Holiday rep?

Had a mate do this a few years ago now, had a great time and he def wasn't gay, plenty of wine women and song and most of the time getting paid for it whilst laying on a beach too!
    lucky git!

  • Being that you work for a family firm and are bored/under-employed could you go part time and study on a day release? That way you'll get qualifications without having to take too much of a financial hit.

And as others have said - travel alone, you'll meet loads of people many of whom will be travelling alone or in small groups.
