Anyone know much about Liverpool?

Hi guys. It's been a good week for me as I've been offered a new job at the main Liverpool Uni and will be starting in March. For now I'll be commuting from Manchester but if anyone has any knowledge of the place such as good places to see, places to eat, drinking establishments etc. that would be great. My car doesn't have hub caps so I'm not too worried about that.

  • Both Cathederals are impressive.
    No football to speak of.
Albert Dock is a good area during the day - take the Duck tour, and see the museums.

The nightlife is absolutely cracking - think more Big Market in Newcastle, rather than Eltham High Street
Chinatown is the place later on in the evening - Cream is still a top club if thats your bag

The Beatles tour is a good way to meet single female tourists, but not much else.
  • Scousers really are just one big family who always look out for each other and have an amazing sense of communtiy spirit. That's why there is absolutely zero crime in Liverpool.
  • Scouse humour they really know how to have a good laugh Ken Dodd -- Stan Boardman-- Cilla Black-- Jimmy Tarbuck .
  • Only been once but cracking night out, really good music scene (obviously) and since they got city of culture, lots of regeneration etc so there are far worse places to live and/or work
  • Very honest people, always owning up to their errors and are the first to apologies.

Plenty of (would be) comedians on here but the reality is that Liverpool (from my 20 years plus of living and working here) is a great place. Not many live Charlton matches on the doorstep but there isn't much else I miss about day to day living in London (especially the traffic congestion). Each to his own obviously but Liverpool suits me fine. Plenty to see and do and not over priced. Liverpool University is very well respected and the area it is located in is an architectural treasure.

Sure, like every city, we have our scallys but they won't bother you on a day to day basis. And don't worry about hub caps I think they have moved on from that.

As has been said the regeneration of the city in recent years is very impressive.

    Enjoy!
  • Thanks guys, really looking forward to a new place! Everyone seems really positive about Liverpool and will have to give it a proper visit to scope out the best places. Thanks for the suggestions! Hopefully Anfield and Goodison will be on our radars sooner rather than later.
  • Down matthew street on a fri or sat always a good crack, birds are lovely and funny love it up there, always plenty of 'scallys' about u will be offerd everything from home made smack to rolex's to aftershave and porno dvds if u spend more than an hour in a pub anywhere.
  • Les Says will be your man for all Scouse queries, but until he shows up, Lark Lane in the south of the city's a decent place to spend a civilised evening.
  • The Pen & Wig - fiver a dance.

  • Do not go ANYWHERE NEAR Huyton. Without doubt the roughest looking place I've ever been.
  • Rock Spectical likes the Cathedral in Liverpool............
  • Just mention you're from Manchester and you'll be alright...
  • In my first year of university in Liverpool at the moment, and the one thing I will tell you is that for the reputation the city carries, the people are very friendly and warm welcoming. Always willing to help you if your ever lost or anything like that. The only bad people i have come across are the black cab taxi drivers, especially at a night time they can be very dodgy at times.
Apart from that, you should love the place mate!
  • Whatever you do, don't go "eh eh calm down like", in the middle of a kebab shop at 3am whilst its packed out with scousers.

Can be a very scary experience
  • Play vets football against a few Liverpool sides and they're gobby but decent lads. Formby lot turned out to be half the Vauxhall motors conference side of 5 years back which was a bit more of a test than we were expecting. Saturday night out a great night but like all our cities, its deadly dull and ugly round the edges.
Heritage market is a good couple of hours out with the Mrs.
  • Lived on the posh side Birkenhead for a while, lovely people and great nite life, used to get the ferry over and as mentioned the docks are a good place to visit.
Sure you'll have a great time.
The royal court is a good music venue.
  • Lived there for 4 years in the early 90s & loved it - probably changed a lot since...........
