Yesterday most fans would've been happy with, say, Gary Johnson, but many of those active on the internet could now be voicing disappointment that we didn't get SCP.

Don't agree with the idea that the new manager must have experience.

Several names linked with the job aren't that experienced. We were after Howe, who is about 8 years younger than Powell. Clarke is no longer an option, Hughton is probably waiting for a job in a higher divsion.

Like Howe, it seems Tisdale and O'Driscoll aren't interested in leaving their clubs at the moment. Poyet we never had a chance of getting.

Johnson? What sort of message would that send out, replacing Parky with the manager of a club a few positions below us in the league. Hoddle's is still working on his academy in Spain. They have experience but it still wouldn't guarantee anything.

It's worked for other clubs, both smaller and bigger clubs. Newcastle, Norwich and Leeds didn't get promoted because they had experienced managers, they had good managers. As a player he's about as experienced as you can get, apart from never playing European football. He's won several promotions as a player, with us, West Ham, Leicester (and after checking wikipedia), Derby and Southend. He's worked with many different managers, quite a few that have been successful (as the promotions show). I hope we take the risk before someone else does.

Bryan Gunn at Norwich could be an example of when it goes wrong.

But any manager can go wrong, if your style does not fit all the talent and experience in the world can still not help you

There's probably no pattern either way as to whether a former legend does well or not at a club. I'd imagine it's completely random.
  • Would I be correct in thinking that Powell would get alot more faces back to The Valley!?

Sven on Powell in December after Newcastle were linked.
Powell is wanted by Newcastle United's new manager Alan Pardew to join his coaching staff at St James's Park, but Eriksson said Powell had an important role to play at City.

"I am going to do everything I can to keep Chris and I have already told him that," Eriksson said.

"There are simple reasons for that. First of all, he is a good leader and a good coach. Secondly, he is a very good human being and we don't want to lose him, absolutely not.
Stay one step ahead of the weather

"He is very popular with the players and the supporters, who look up to him, and they should do because he was an extremely good player and a good man. He will be a very good manager in the future.

"I think he likes the responsibility here and how much he is involved. I would like to see him working with Derek (Fazackerley) with the first team. But, we are going to try to keep him.

"Anyhow, Newcastle have not made an approach and they would have to because he is contracted to the club."

Well, with him in charge, I'd do my best to get on the first plane possible. With Gary Johnson or Waddock, I would not be so enthused.
  • For every brian gunn there is a lee Clarke , Nigel Pearson, Simon grayson

It won't happen but it should

SkyBet managers odds are back up, but nothing for Charlton, yet Walsall and Stockport are there. Manager expected to be named today?

Dowie, Pardew and Parkinson didn't share the same ethos as the club and its fans. Curbs, Lennie and Jimmy Seed did - so I can see nothing wrong with decisions made on the basis of the heart when it comes to appointing Charlton managers.

As for Chrissy being soft - I doubt it. Do you think that the bunch of mercenaries that are modern day footballers would appoint a softy as their spokesman?

When I first heard this on last night I was a bit unsure, not too sure if we could take a risk on a maybe man at this stage and I still think it resembles a big risk but sometimes you have to take risks and I now wouldn't mind us taking one with Powell, especially if he has an experienced number two to guide him and a good coaching team. Would be heartbreaking for it not to work out though if it was too go wrong. I like the man so much though, I think I woud resort to violence if I heard anyone booing him!

I think it would be a big mistake to appoint Chris Powell. I would like to remember him as an excellent player and a wonderful man. If he was appointed as Manager and he didnt do so well it would sully my thoughts on him.
  • I don't think fans would give as much stick as many think if Powell came in and it all went tits up.
  • i dont think CP is in the running for the job so put money on him and more and more people backed it so he has gone to fav , i think it will be Gary Johnson today or monday !
but i would love chris powell rather then Gary "boring" Johnson

Poyet and Howe are the best two managers in Div 3 and neither had any more experience than SCP when they got got the job.

Press day at the training ground today. Could be interesting.

Personally dont think it will be Powell. But suspect we may get some news today.

Well, according to that article he's very experienced - was 174 years old when he made his England debut!
  • I think Sven's reasons why Leicester want to keep him pretty much encapsulate why we should go for him:

''He is a good leader and a good coach. Secondly, he is a very good human being and we don't want to lose him, absolutely not. He is very popular with the players and the supporters, who look up to him, and they should do because he was an extremely good player and a good man. He will be a very good manager in the future. I think he likes the responsibility .''

    That future is now, folks!

i got to admit that seeing him in that first press conference and chris going on about how much this club means to him and how honoured he is to be given the chance to manage by us ect. ect... and actually meaning it and me knowing he means it is one of the most exciting feelings ive had for a while about the club (the takeover is good news but im still holding judement on that for now) any manager is a gamble as people have pointed out before me, so i suppose... sod it, lets have some black magic down the valley!!!

not holding my breath though, if it happens cool, if not then there is always a next time!?
