    Great news !!

just love his afternoon show - esp when callers ring in with their replies to the many subjects he sets..........like the old days when he hosted 606
  • [cite]Posted By: stonemuse[/cite]Anyhow, one night in 1977, Elvis's death is announced to a crowd of punks at The Vortex in London's swinging Soho. The assembled punks cheer. Baker leaps to the stage and grabs the mike. He begins an impassioned defence of Elvis, calling the crowd morons (one can't help but imagine at this point the amount of gob that must have sailed in his direction). Without Elvis, there'd be no punk, he roars at them. Well, without Baker there'd be none of this.

Danny was there but it wasn't him that said that ... I know because I was there that night. It was a Sham 69 gig and Jimmy Pursey made the comment to the mass of Skins and Punks ...Danny certainly agreed and made the point just as strongly in the audience but it was not him on the microphone.

The events of the Tony Parsons novel 'Stories We Could Tell' was based on what happened that night in August 1977, including that incident.

He was on Desert Island Discs this morning. If you've got 45 minutes free, take a listen.

You know what, 4 years on, that quote of his at the top of the thread wasn't so wrong after all...

very good ... typical danny baker choices

No idea what they were other than being obscure/controversial/different just for the sake of it.
Can't remember them all but there was Max Bygraves, Peter Sellers and Tommy Steele.  He said that he'd deliberately picked stuff that he'd heard as a kid as that informed his later musical tastes.  It sounded to me like Junior Choice from the '60s.

if you listen yo Baker on BBC LDN then you'd know he isn't playing those choices just to be obscure/controversial/different just for the sake of it , it's because that's his tastes. Personally I love the wide range of stuff he's into

Not played for controversy  - he explained that he chose songs that he had known since he was a kid and meant something to him.
  • Definitely a day to listen to #DannyBaker @prodnose on GLR (won't call it anything else)http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_london

Absolutely the best broadcaster on radio in the last 10 to 15 years. I don't care if he's Millwall.
