Young ---Rufus-- Costa-- Powell (or Konch) not a shabby defence that.

was atalking at work about Rodbns goal against Moan Uts other nite -- said saw him score a great goal against us at The Valley when Chelski won 2 nil. Herman Crespo scored the other and MoM was Essen his first season ----------------- seems like a life time ago.

still great memories just sad how the kak level we are at now.

GH....how have we managed so fall so far and so quickly.....it's been a nightmare of the first order.
I just had the feeling that I could never shake off that once Curbs left the dynasty that he'd created the walls would come tumbling down but who's have guessed so quickly and dramaticly....can't say I'm pleased in any way shape or form to have been proved right....I'd sooner have been wrong and us still be in The Prem....but I saw it coming as did many of us old 'uns.
I could never understand those who thought he'd run his course.....they'd all love him back now wouldn't they, that is if they could manage to eat that huge mountain of humble pie they've made..

What an absolute legend. A top bloke and a top player. One of the players who will still be very fondly remembered many many years from now.

Proper Charlton player and, I have to confess, my biggest mistake when it comes to Charlton.

In 1994 or thereabouts I watched Richard and Linvoy Primus away at Margate in the semi final of the Kent Cup.

I was convinced Primus would make it (as he did) but Rufus to me at that time looked like bambi on ice and I thought he wouldn' make the grade.

    Good job Curbs knew better!

Why don't we play in the Kent Cup anymore? Could play our reserves like Brighton do in the Sussex one. When did we stop entering it?

Confession time - I thought the exact same thing :) When I first saw Primus I thought he was a dead cert to make it - he was a beast of a player at a young age. Rufus looked so frail, and his legs were so ungainly looking that when he ran he looked like a shopping trolley falling down a flight of stairs. How wrong I was!

Because of all our fans insisting Charlton is in London rather than Kent :-)

To be serious, if memory serves me right, we stopped playing in the Kent Cup roughly when we reached the Prem partly because we joined the Prem reserve league which had a bigger fixture list than the old London Midweek league and Football Combination which we had competed in previously. The Kent Cup competition itself also had difficulties to the extent that even non-league clubs (the better ones anyway) began treating it as a reserve competition so it lost prestige and probably wasn't regarded as challenging enough for aspiring Football League players.

  • There was also a Chelsea game where he made up ground on Gudjonsson and took the ball off his toes just as he was about to strike - fantastic tackle.

Was it Sir Bobby Robson that thought he was the best modern defender never to play for England ??

Good Luck to him in the future. For me, the greatest charlton player in my lifetime.

Nice guy - spotted him in the car park prior to a game (he was not playing due to an injury) - went over to shake his hand and he was such a gentleman - not too up himself to have a chat with a fan.

my son is lucky to be going on the tour with the Soccer Elite Academy - playing in goal for U10 and U12 teams. He is sooooo excited!

Are you trying to shake his belief in God?! :-)

  • The guy was a rock for us , I'm sure he loves the Club and could help CP lay the foundations for our assault one day into the Premier League.

Posting without reading what has gone before - quality centre half had difficulty passing from a to b but defended admirably against some of the best in Europe with pace to stay with an attacker one of our best central defenders unquestionably in 50+years of following the addicks with all due respect to Jago, Hinton, Went, Shipperly, Elliott, Shirtliff, Webster and Uncle Tom Cobley :-D

Good luck Richard. Hope it works out well. On a personal note I never thought Richard would go on into management. Prove me wrong please. My favourite player in all my 51 years of supporting The Addicks.

Would like to say how brilliant it is to see so many people saying how much they loved Rufus, a player whose career was sadly cut short but still made this much of an impact. Not many players I think whose career end early get as much recognition as Rufus does. That's just my opinion though.
  • With put a doubt the one player that every Cafc fan rated loved and knew that when he was playing you got no less than hundred percent from

Best defender I've ever seen at Charlton, no doubt at all. Him not ever getting an England cap still winds me up to this day.
