Highly-rated defender Chris Solly has signed a new one-year contract with Charlton, the club announced on Monday.
The versatile 19-year-old, who made 11 appearances last term, is the second academy graduate to pledge his future to the club after midfielder Alex Stavrinou signed up for 2010/11 last week.
Chatham-born Solly made a long-awaited first-team bow on the final day of the 2008/09 season when he replaced Darren Ward early in a Championship clash with Norwich City.
And his full debut came in the first week of last term when he took his place in his favoured right-back position in a Carling Cup clash at Hereford United.
Active in three of the first four games of the season, Solly also started in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Barnet and his first league start came at left-back in Charlton's rescheduled 1-1 draw at Walsall on February 2nd.
A former FA Youth Cup quarter-finalist with the Addicks, Solly, who can also play in the centre of midfield, again played on the left of the rearguard in the 4-0 defeat against Millwall on March 13th.
Solly, one of the first to play at the new Wembley in 2007 with England U16s, had picked up the prestigious Victory Shield with the Young Lions a year earlier and was on standby for his country's U19s last term.
The tough-tackling and tenacious defender may well have featured more at right-back last term but for an untimely knee injury sustained in training in October, a day before the trip to Gillingham.
With regular right-back Frazer Richardson subsequently hobbling off at the krbs Priestfield Stadium with an injury which would not be fully healed until mid-January, Solly had reason to be disappointed.
He returned to the bench on Boxing Day against Swindon Town and made five further substitute outings in 2010, most recently in the 1-0 win against Colchester United at The Valley on April 13th.
On Charlton's books since the age of 12, Solly has worked his way through the ranks and made his debut for the club's U18s when just 14 years old.
A regular in the reserves over the past few seasons, Solly has skippered the second string on several occasions.
Solly will return to Sparrows Lane with the rest of his Charlton teammates for pre-season training on Thursday when the club begins its preparations for the 2010/11 campaign.

You can only sign what you're offered, Golfie. It's the club that offered the 1 year contract - and it sounds like that is going to be their standard type of contract in the short term.
Good news. As said I doubt he was offered a longer deal. I'd imagine Solly and Stavrinou would have signed longer deals if they could, they're looking to break into the team here.
Like last year, we'll be handing out 2 year deals at the most, so young players that still have a lot to prove probably won't get more than a 1 year deal. Basey and Wagstaff if they stay might get two, but they're both closer to the first team.

reckon the only deals you will see from us of longer than a year will be to anyone for whom we pay a fee and whose value we think will go up so as to protect our investment.

I wonder if it's less than what he was earning before, as he went pro 2 years ago at 17 and got a 2 year deal while we were a Championship side aiming for promotion.

I do not think that younger players can expect anything more at present than a 1 year deal. Probably the only exception would be to tie them up if other clubs were known to be trying to' poach' them......

Glad to hear he is staying. Wish it were for longer but as WSS one year deals will be pretty much the norm in this division.

Sure i read somewhere that the club also rate him as a midfield player so could be a useful utility player
