PHIL Parkinson says Charlton are “a million miles away” from being competitive in League One and wants eight new signings before the start of the season.

The Addicks manager saw his inexperienced side beaten 2-0 at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, with his young players being given a tough time in a second half dominated by the Dons.

“If you write down the players who have gone, of the ones who finished the last game of last season only two of that team are left,” said Parkinson.

“We need to get some quality into the squad but we all know that and there’s a lot of work to be done. We’re nowhere near the finished article and I think we need another eight players.

“We need a squad of 20 and I’ll be working hard to bring in another eight. There’s no real timescale because it’s important we get the right ones. All managers would like the whole squad in on the first day of pre-season but the squad building is a work in progress throughout that period.

“We’re a million miles away from where we’ve got to be to be competitive in this division but the board are Charlton supporters and they want to see a side out there that’s competitive. We’ll be endeavouring to achieve that.”

8 of the very best please Parky!

what a depressing first line !!, just hope he is able to conjour up these players from somewhere and sooner rather than later so at least they have a bit of time to put a side together..

Someone has been reading AFKA's statbank.

He wants a squad of 20, so I'd say he sees our main squad something like

    GK Elliot (new GK)

    RB (new RB) Solly
CB Doherty, (new CB, possibly Dailly), Llera,
LB Youga, Basey (assuming he signs a new deal)

RM Wagstaff, (new RM, not sure Wagstaff will be first choice though)
    CM Semedo, Racon, McCormack
LM Jackson (new LM, proper winger like Reid)

    ST A. Sodje (new ST x 3, x 2 if McLeod stays)

Plus back up from the young players, some closer to the first team than others, Jenkinson, Cousins, Mambo, Stavrinou, Davisson, Tuna and Perkins.

That's before anyone leaves of course, which hopefully no one will.

More Parky comments on the OS, including Dailly being in today for talks and a bit about the game on Saturday.

still no mention of Youga or Sodje, not that I'm really bothered about either, but would be nice to know if they are staying or going or whatever.

Like Burton, I'm pretty sure Sodje has gone and won't be coming back. Don't know for certain of course.

Same happened with Ben Thatcher a couple of years ago, wasn't officially announced that he'd been released. Eventually it was just clear he wasn't going to play for us again.

I bumped into Tim Breacker in the Esso Garage at the eltham part of the A20. (it is being refusrbished now) and that was at about 7.45am, so i imagine the whole team are working pretty hard at that time in the morning. Sadly i was running late for work and didnt have time to have a chin wag

I meant Akpo. Was hoping that we might be selling him. Burton and Sodje (Sam) have been released, contact's up and we are not paying them so they have gone really. If they come back then fair enough but as at this moment they have nothing to do with us.

Oh ok, doubt it, mentioned there in the AFC Wimbledon preview. I'd imagine Parky wanted to give the two trialist strikers a game, and Tuna and Perkins in the second half.

If fit he would have got at least the 45 minutes. It was said last season he wasn't ever fully fit so he needed a full pre-season to be absolutely fit for the start of the season. Maybe he came because Sam was at the Club and now he isn't he himself isn't happy. Who knows but as our only senior 'striker' he is conspicuous by his absence.

This is probably wrong, i dont quite know how to quote properly. The refurbishment of that particular garage is still on-going. It doesnt look like it will be fixed any time soon either. If, when it is complete, i see TB in there i will try and obtain some information. And ask why they dont sign Simeon Jackson haha

interesting that Parky said about getting some 'funds' together. does this mean we're actually looking to buy some players?

Feel sorry for Parkinson really, no fault of his own that he has to rush round & build a completely new squad after pre-season has already started. So far his signings have been pretty good if, Kyle Reid is one of the Eight he has to bring in I would say he has not got a lot wrong so far this summer.

In terms of his recruitment drive, Parkinson was reluctant to get pinned down regarding timescales. But he did reveal that the out-of-contract Christian Dailly, last season's player of the year, was due back at Sparrows Lane for talks on Monday."

If Parky needs that number of players, then he needs to start by signing a player Dailly.
That could make 5 new players signed this week alone..

Basically, July will ascertain whether we get our targets or not, August will be for taking in loans and short-term deals to plug the gaps.

7 or 8 seems about right.

    I expect:

2 from last year to sign
2-3 'new' players to arrive on 1-2yr deals
2-4 players to come in on loan, with the bulk of them being season-long.

Don't forget the Liverpool reserve team, AFKA ....... being loaned en masse to Charlton as part of the Jonjo Shelvey deal.

I am starting to believe this too but I believe Randolph was just as equal.
