Charlton poised to sign West Ham's Matt Fry

Thursday, 05 August 2010

By John Stanton

CHARLTON are expected to complete the signing of defender Matt Fry from West Ham United today.

The 19-year-old, who can play at left-back or centre-back, spent a spell on loan at The Valley last season but did not feature in the first team.

He will again join on a temporary basis, signing until January with an option to extend the deal until the end of the season.

Put him at left back and move Jackson into the centre with Semedo?

Has allegedly been on the cards all summer, the only thing that has suprised me has been why it has taken so long, presumably down to Wham i suppose.

Having been training with us last season, at least Parky knows what he is getting, so i view that as a positive.

Can't say I'd be happy with this. How many games did he play for us on loan last year? The way i look at this is that Fry is cheap cover in case of injuries. Basey could have done the same job and he was homegrown but I guess this all comes down to finances. Fry must be a lot cheaper. Perhaps this gives us flexibility in the budget to go get that No.10 we need.

Think West Ham wanted to have a look at him in training and they rate him very highly. Similar to how Parky is looking at some of ours before he loans them out.

May have wanted to keep hold of him until they got a replacement in as I think they're signing Reid the NZ centre-back today.

Sound move I think. I understand the comments re Basy and am inclined to agree, however basey probably wants to play more regularly and may feel he'll do that at Aberdeen, as well as posibly playing a better level than we're currently at. There's also less of a risk with signing a loan player - West Ham may well be paying some or all of his wages and if he gets seriously injured we can send him back and replace him. If we signed Basey up for another year and he then did his cruciate ligament tomorrow it'd be money down the drain. We could afford to carry that risk on a squad player 2 or 3 years ago, probably can't now though.

We need a backup left back/centre back for Saturday just as much as we need a backup striker. We have no fit players in the entire squad whose preferred position is left back.

maybe he is maybe he isn't BUT he isn't ours. We are grooming him for West Ham. Some loanees you could argue that there would be a chance to sign them later, as with Reid, but Fry has only just signed an extended contract at West Ham so that isn't going to be the case. I'd rather have kept Basey.

agree with that. Semedo and McCormack are too similar whilst Racon is a luxury.

If Parky is looking at one upfront for Saturday and this happens I'd put him straight in at left back and move Jackson into a 3 man central midfield. Like the idea of Semedo sitting infront of the back four, with Jackson and Racon infront.

we have three CB's - two to play and one on the bench and Jackson who can play LB although maybe not his preferred position. Up front we have Pawal and Akpo and, and ...... er no-one even on the bench. A back-up striker is much more important imo, actaully make that a striker to start as Akpo is the back-up's back-up.

Oh, and another keeper would be nice.

I'm beginning to wonder if you are Grant Basey's dad.
What does it matter if he's West Hams player? If he improves our squad then he's welcome here.

We do not have a CB on the bench - Llera is suspended after his red card against Swindon. I know Jackson will at left back but I don't see why playing Reid/Wagstaff up front is more worrying than playing er, Solly/Semedo at left back in an emergency.

I think goalkeeper is the priority at the moment.
  • Matt Fry has linked up with League One club Charlton Athletic on loan until January ( On the offical West ham Website now )

    Exactly.

And it's not as if he's an unknown quantity. The management would have had a good look at him last spring, and must have been impressed with his attitude and ability ..... or they wouldn't be going back for him now.

If West Ham have just signed him on an improved and extended contract, then they must rate him as having the quality to play in the Prem within a couple of seasons.

Could be a very useful signing.

Although I liked Basey a lot, and I admired his spirit/passion, I have to agree with many views on here that he was not the best.

For me, Basey committed too early/got skinned/turned easily/found out-of-position all too often. He was a useful player to have but no more than that and I don't think we'll rue letting him go.

Matt Fry seems to be a better fit for us and will again help with the natural balance of the team.

It would seem that Reid might have to play on the right wing, assuming Fry/Jackson are covering the left flank?

Like most on here, I haven't actually yet seen Fry play.

But as a 19 year old at a Prem club, I assume West Ham consider he has the pace and mobility to play in the Prem?
Lack of pace has been one of our concerns in central defence.

If he has quick feet and can turn sharply, then that may help compensate for our 3 senior CBs, who total about 100 years of age between them!
