'Cleaning seats is beneath us'

Met a young man at Operation Pigeon Poo at the Valley who didn't want his identity to be revealed as he would be severely ribbed by his Charlton supporting mates. Apparently they felt that seat cleaning was beneath them. Astounded me TBH, surely this isn't a common sentiment amongst young male supporters?

No I am on a closed list elsewhere and a 15 yo lad lied about his age so that he could get there and helpin the clean up, travelled quite a way in two days running

I have to say I think that attitude is fairly commonplace, I know both my 12 year old and 16 year old thought I was bonkers

    "Kids today".

To be fair though, it shouldn't be that surprising. Football is massively sold as a "product" these days and you have to pay handsomely to go and watch it. If you are just a casual fan or maybe someone who hasn't (yet) developed a strong affiliation to the club then you'd no more go along to clean seats than go along if Tesco's appealed for customers to come in and wash down their trolleys.

Can't say that's my view, but I can understand it.

As a job (paid employment) I feel that is well beneath me, however if I was not at work this week I would probably have gone along and got involved

I also would have fully expected to be called 'pigeon shit boy' or someting similar on my next visit to the Valley

Sums up where we were in 1990, and where we are in 2010, both in general social terms and as a club.

The club has been asking fans to do this for a few years now, so it's nothing new.

Just read that. Wish I hadn't now. The man is clearly an attention seeker. It's quite sad and pathetic really.

I think you misunderstood me a bit there Stu, I was actually referring to the attitude of stilladdickted's mates compared with those of the Valley party era, rather than the financial state of the club.

Agreed, any press is good press for that idiot.
  • can't believe Mr N Gray , let slip the fact that he hadn't had a season ticket for 20 years! the amount of whinging and running down he does of this club you would had thought he'd mortgaged his house and poured the money into Charlton! I reckon he's a Palaace fan anyway , is he 'Banned ' on here?

I know, dreadfully expensive, Offy old chap.

When I was a lad, it cost 2/- (that's 2 shillings, 2 bob even) to get in.
Done in all my pocket money, I can tell you.

Mind you, the old Grandstand didn't have many seats to clean....... and the young apprentices did that after they'd cleaned the players boots and ran up and down the East Terrace 100 times to get fit.

Ah, the good old days. Try telling that to the kids of today - and they won't believe you!
