"Why is it that the big Premier League clubs have all the good stuff?"

Just took my 7 year old boy to buy him his first set of football boots and as we were walking around the sports shop this is what he asked me as he looked on open mouthed at the huge variety of Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal, etc stuff they had in there. Some fella was even trying on some Man United shoes. Not trainers or anything, proper black leather works shoes that had some sort of Man U branding on them (Yeah, "classy", but that's not the point!)

"Look, there's even something with West Ham on it", he said - which did make me smile.

Then we had a look at the different kits, Sporting Lisbon, Bayern Munich, Barcelona they just went on and on. "Where's the Charlton kits?" he asked. There weren't any, of course - and this was a sports shop in Charlton.

Having just read the "Because my dad does" thread I'm really having serious doubts and second thoughts about what the poor lad may have to go through in life all because of me. All I could say to him was, "That's just the way it is son".

My son has been researching his new boots for the coming season and has chosen some Nike's at £265. He is 8.

I have told him what his budget is and he is now re-researching.....Shame Woolworths closed as I am sure all mine used to come from there.

Credit to him though, he found the Oldham game very boring but could tell you the brand and type of every pair of boots being worn that day.

You might just have given him the perfect insight into what being a Charlton fan is all about.

Sickening isn't it? I took both my nephews to the Oldham game - the younger one loved it, despite knowing fuck all about football. I think he just wanted to be with his uncle for the afternoon. The older one, who is quite a good little player, couldn't have looked more bored all game. He asked on the train about our sponsors, and who made our kit - when I told him that it wasn't Nike or Adidas he laughed and said that 'proved' Charlton were a small club. I hate pretty much everything about the world nowadays.

That's exactly what I'm worried about.

i think quite a lot of kids these days dont have the attention span to watch real football

only for watching highlights and playing it on their playstations

On the subject of football boots, it's ridiculous how much they cost nowadays, my cousin just picked up a pair of these !!!!!!!

£250.00 for a shocking coloured boot, he's only 15 and will be using them for Rugby as well as Football

I have a pair of 39.99 adidas adinova's, had them for 3 years, nothing wrong with them

my own son is kind of like that. I don't think that it is a kids nowadays thing though, as i didn't really start enjoying football till i was about 11 before that i never really saw the point.

I do understand what your saying but when I was seven our club shop (Stall) was the size of a donought stand. Comes with the territory I'm afraid.

Would never force my boy into supporting Charlton.I'll take him a few times and if he gets the bug then so be it.
Never thought i'd say that but football is fast becoming my third sport after Cricket and golf. There's so much to dislike about the game these days.

I remember reading Pele's autobiography, he used to run around barefoot kicking an old sock full of peanuts or something. He certainly didn't have boots with specially injected studs for optimal traction stability!! Mind you he didn't need a bucketful of Viagra to get it up in his younger days either I suppose it's all about progression.

I live in Nottingham, and remembered this thread when I was in town today. Was looking to buy new runners, so was in the sports shops. You can buy Chelski/Arsenal flip-flops, but not a single thing of Forest or County merchandise. County I can understand, but two European Cups not good enough?

I wonder if it's also a case in Dottingub of replica kit being primarily sold in the club shops at County and Forest?
"Proper" fans would go to the ground or buy online to get their replica shirts.

Maybe this is generally the case also with clubs outside the top of the Premiershit?

Which means the armchair fans and plastics who support the 'Sky 4', and have never in their life been to 'their' club' ground - can go to the City Centre sports shops to get their tat?

My first adult boots were always Addidas .........and after wearing most of everything else over the years, I've gone back to Addidas.

At my age I'm now only playing local non-League summer games (still hard fought and hugely competitive!) - so my latest boots are Addidas Adi Questra mouldies. Really comfortable - and cheap, reduced from £39.99 to £24.99.

They'll do me for a while!

Good point, Oggy. You'd still expect a few replica Forest kits in the main shops. Two European Cups!! What have Chelsea won?

As for whether what you say is right or not, I've never been to the CG. At ML, yeah the club shop does most of their sales.

Anyway, I didn't mind, as I got a Chelsea away kit and some Arsenal flip-flops. Now drinking a nice cup of tea out of my Liverpool mug. Proper fan me. ;-)

Then you're not true Charlton. Never seen us stuffed there?

    ;o)

Arsenal flip-flops .....ha ha, do me a favour. At least they are red. You could cut the Charlton badge from a page of the programme and stick it over the Arse 'loose cannon' logo.

You'd think there were plenty of Liverpool mugs about, without you buying one.

Sadly, no. Never seen Charlton get stuffed at the City Ground.

I can only hope I'll get a similar memory of Charlton at Meadow Lane... hopefully not.

I think I'll cut out a big photo of Alan Pardew, just so I can walk on his face every day.

    Alan Who .....?

Is that the geezer who got fired at Southampton after winning 4-0 away?
Couldn't have happened to a nicer chap.

Well it was going to be Dowie, but I thought that standing on his face too much may cause improvement

If you can get him to at least try them on, get him to try the Adidas Copa Mondial's, they are the most comfortable boots you can wear, they now do the mixed interchangeable studs as well. Should eb able to get them for well under £80 & most importantly they are Black.
