People that watch Charlton and Millwall

Met up with some of my fiancé's friends for a birthday drink in New Cross last night, most of whom are Millwall season ticket holders. I got chatting to the wife of one of them who told me that she takes her kids to both Millwall and Charlton home games. She said that her kids just loved watching football and as the child season tickets were so cheap, it made more financial sense than travelling to watch Millwall, she also said that she didn't feel safe taking her kids to away Millwall games, that Charlton was a safe family club.

I've heard stories of people that do this, just going to Millwall and Charlton games, but it seemed to happen many years ago. I know people that watch Welling and Dulwich Hamlets as well as Charlton, but Millwall seems beyond the Pale.

Just out of interest, does anyone else know people that do this sort of thing?

• When I was about ten I used to go to the Valley with my Dad and next week to the old den with my school buddies. The Valley stole my heart but I did enjoy the old docker banter at the den.
• 1970 was my first season, Charrlton/Millwall alternate weeks with my bruv and uncle. bro supported Millwall
so i supported Charlton. Thank god my uncle never took us to Palarce
• My father used to alternate Millwall and Charlton, but as I was taken to Charlton first....the rest is (my) history.
• I went to a few Millwall games with mates from school down at the old Den when Charlton were away back in my teens - must've gone to a dozen or so games over a couple of seasons.

Wouldn't dream of doing it now.
• My Dad didn't see any rivalry between the two clubs having gone to see both in the 60's. He was and is always Charlton but used to go to the dennis with mates.

After all those years his head was turned at the millwall game at The Valley last season though - I think he finally realised that they really are the scum bags the media make out.

I apologise in advance for posting this twice - can't control it.
• Met some fellas at Reading, most Millwall season ticket holders but some used to go to the valley a fair bit.

I understand that travelling is expensive, but 'supporting' both clubs on alernative weekends at alternative grounds seems ridiculous to me.
• The are some interesting stories here although this sort of thing does seem to be a rare event.

Personally there's no way I could ever go to watch Millwall, what struck me about the conversation I had with this woman was that she didn't seem bothered, she was quite matter of fact about it. Given that a child season ticket is about £50, I could see her point. I guess that at some point the kids will choose which club they want to go to, I'm guessing it will be Millwall although I do know of Millwall dads that take their Charlton supporting sons to the Valley.
• Gumbo went to Millwall with a couple of his Millwall Mates on saturday, he enjoyed the game enormously apparently.
• My old man did that in the 50's & early 60's before he was old enough to do away games, as did loads of Charlton & Millwall. But then he also regularly went to Arsenal and Tottenham when Millwall were away too.
• I used to go to Millwall games at the old den in the late 50's & 60's with my mates who were in the main Millwall supporters and they used to come to The Valley to see CAFC. I lived 20 mins walking distance to the old Den and also had an uncle who supported Millwall so I would go with him sometimes in the 70's.
However my Dad was Charlton Ath through & through and so am I, they have alsways been my team, going to Millwall was just to watch a game really.

Used to sit in front of a woman who went to Charlton & Millwall, she always used to slaughter the team when we were in the Prem, Euell was useless, Claridge was a god in her eyes.

She appeared on a programme on the BBC which followed clubs around (can't remember what it was called but it featured Ian Ridley taking over Weymouth) at a Millwall game being asked about the players or something.

How we laughed when she used to shout carry on like this Charlton & you'll end up lower than Millwall - ha ha ha..... Oh.......

My 1st ever season ticket was at Millwall. Loved the atmosphere at The Den, but then Charlton came and stole my heart.
• WSC, i know the woman you mean. Not the full ticket. Used to be a regular on Betty's coach for away games.

Very funny story about her here:

• When I was a school boy (1970s ) I used to go to West Ham quite a lot when Charlton played away. The only way I could see first division football.
I went to Millwall a few times and Palace once or twice. I was really into my football then and would watch any old crap just to fill Saturdays afternoons.
Sometimes, nowdays, I'll go down to watch Bromley, mainly to have a drink in the bar with some friends. (Iknow that really is sad)
Charlton was and is the only team I've supported though.
• I've never been to Millwall and im 29 and lived in the area all my life!
• A mate of mine used to go to both though favoured Charlton but as he got older turned to Millwall and is now a spanner with CAFC tattoo on one arm and MFC on the other.
• AFKA, definitely not the full ticket! She just seemed to stop going about 3 seasons before we went down from the Prem.

I go quite often. Get a free ticket to take a chap with congenital talipes and help out his dad. Millwall was the second team I ever saw live. I couldn't care less about any rivalry with Millwall, I dislike Palace deeply but don't hate them anymore.

Millwall have been amazing recently. Jackett plays with two offensive full backs, and only one truly reliable defensive player in the front six who's Trotter. Trotter's built like Huddlestone and it seems if he's carrying an injury he struggles... still scored a cracking goal for them. I thought they'd struggle away from home as they're too loose, and you can't get away with only one reliable defensive player in the front six. Instead it happened against Watford.

If anyone saw it Danny Graham was AMAZING, Watford went immediately 4-5-1 without ball with Graham up front. Yet unlike Coventry with Platt they picked a pass to Graham from closer to him. Graham could choose any of Millwall's back four to go one on one with and took the piss out of all them. Second half when they were four up they swapped Graham back into midfield who won everything, and left Sordell the speed meister up front to turn the defence. They took the piss out of Millwall and Jackett didn't respond. He plays Abdou in cm who runs after the ball or for the pass like an e-numbered-up nine year old, or mkandwire in cm who only wants to become the next full back and disappears there. He should get Jack Smith inside to play cm.
• In the days when football was cheap(er) I would go anywhere in London to watch games (if Charlton didn't have one). Watched a few games in Millwall's 3rd Div promotion season under George Graham. Their football was excellent and it was no surprise that they went up again not long after. They had good forwards (John Fashanu, Steve Lovell, Steve Lowndes, Kevin Bremner and Anton Otulowkowski) and looked to entertain. Before that, I watched a lot at Brentford and they were really enertaining...Francis Joseph, Stan Bowles, Terry Hurlock, Chris Kamara and a winger called Gary Roberts who was excellent. You could stand on the proper big covered terrace behind the goal....which is now the tiny stand we will be in next week. Saw a lot of Fulham and QPR in the 80's too. Gordon Davies was the hero at Fulham although Ray Houghton was the brains while Clive Allen, Simon Stainrod, Bob Hazell, Terry Fenwick, Tony Currie, John Gregory and Mike Flannagan were the main men at QPR around that time. I started to watch Charlton when Brentford didn't have a game and soon went home and away, only watching the others midweek.

• That's what I did Simo. But I went to Luton v Oxford last year and the ticket was above £20. The match was absolute shite.... although I couldn't believe how two conference teams were so big physically and well setup; boring as sin though. A massive difference to Robbins and Booker up front for Welling when I used to watch them in the conf, and they had midget Phil Handford(?) in midfield.

Luton/Oxford was the first time I've ever been kettled in my life. Whilst I've been 'escorted' to and from grounds before by Policeman, they actually kettled us and then let us down Luton's away end road in three-four stages. Once we got to the end of the road they wanted to force us the long route to Luton's station. But because they were so incompetent and clearly had been terribly trained they broke up once they a few at the end had to start wheeling. Bedfordshire police in the same match tried to storm a wooden stand where some Luton fans were standing up. But the wooden stand only fits one rioted up policeman each step, so they got battered from both sides.

Then the police called it a riot but they started it by some hailariously stupid tactical decisions. Basically jepordising the lives of some Luton idiots in a crappy old stand and creating hatred that transferred onto Oxford supporters. That is why I really can't be arsed to go to many crap grounds these days. In 23 years of going to football I've never seen such incompetence and been treated like scum. And people still believe that the police's ineptness wasn't the massively main factor in Hillsborough.

Rant over.
• i used to go there with my mates sometimes if Charlton were away back in the late 80's. I think the 3-0 defeat at Selhurst really turned the screw a bit for me though. Things righted themselves though when we did the double over them to send them down in the mid 90's but unfortunately they've all started piping up again. It won't last.
•
[cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]http://news.bbc.co.uk/panorama/hi/front_page/newsid_8298000/8298751.stm]here's some video footage of some millwall fans who used to watch charlton ......
ha, good clip that, its like something from the 'harry and paul show'!
• That last line is classic.
• Remember that very well. As they say about a dozen Millwall took on the whole of the Covered End which had been taken by Spurs.

Someone got taken on a stretcher in front of the goal whilst the game went on. I've always wondered what would have happened if it had prevented a goal going in.
Never seen that before or since.

Following year Chelsea wrecked The Valley.
• I live with a Millwall fan and have many Millwall fans as mates. So I've ended up going to a few matches down the den. it's not that bad. He has also come down the valley with me a few times. You can imagine what fun what had the games last season. Fantastic Chirstmas drink up and a interesting trip to the den, which I don't remember. Think that game is best forgotten. I didn't stay around for long after the game that day. I certainly will miss the derby games this season. Lets hope we will be playing them again soon.

Of course if they were Palace fans, it would be other matter......
• When I was a nipper my cousin, who got me into watching Barnsley, would take me off to either Leeds or one of the Sheffield clubs if the Reds were playing too far away. Both Leeds and Sheff United were in the old First Division back then.
I'm quite partial to a 'neutral' game these days too. It makes for a day out around the footie.
