I fully appreciate profiling is an essential tool in online marketing these days, and how some companies pass on your info to other associated companies if they think you tick certain criteria boxes that may prove beneficial.
But i would love to know exactly what criteria boxes i ticked to receive the email i just have from an airline charter broker, offering me discounted hire on jets. Amongst the irresistable bargains being thrown my way is the offer of 25hr cards for the use of a Lear 60 jet for a $125k (down from $135k), or a Gulfstream IV for just $259k (down from $279k).
I've also been sent a 'friendly reminder' i have just a few days left to take advantage of these offers.
I know we moan about the service South Eastern provide on the commute and a lot of us are looking at alternatives, but somehow someone has taken this to the extreme !
Aside from the usual generic spam for things like viagra, anyone else received any form of ridiculous emailed offers ?

Blimey ... that's just downright cruel ... feel very sorry for you.
Basically if you have a website and your email address is on there your screwed - which isnt great if you run a business !
Only way round it is to have that anti spam letter box thing where you have to type in the letters or put your email address on the site as jpeg image that way their spiders cant pick up the email address - once 1 person has it, it gets distributed like a chain letter !
I get far too much spam and I am glad the filters work pretty well in GMAIL - I'm upto about 15-25 a day. Mostly penis related though I have won the Nigerian lottery and discovered I have Nigerian ancestry in the last fortnight
A mate of mine signed up to a new internet provider a few years back. 4 hours later when he got home he had 7 spam messages already. The address was 4 hours old!
And jesus - has anyone EVER been sucked in by one of these? do they make any money?
Sad thing is he is a policeman!!!!
People can find out exactly where you live on a website called 192.com
They get all your sordid details from the council register of electors list and they dont have to legally ask you for permission to display EXACTLY where you live now and have lived in the past.
I've found that you can download a form CO1 which you can send them and they legally have to remove you. Further research has shown that when you fill out the register of electors form you can inform the council that you dont want your details made public.
Scary stuff people.....I got the dreaded tap on the shoulder last May.....and now I know how I was so easily found.
shit ... just looked at that ... scary
Literally one minute later I was hit with a spam avalanche.
I won't be doing that again.
Tossers!

To be fair if you read the register of electors form properly they make it pretty clear that you can opt out of the public register. Whenever you fill in a form with your address on you should look for the box for further disclosure - there will always be one.
The only downside to opting out of the public register of electors is that this is where many companies start for credit checks, so if you don't already have a credit rating you might need to stay in the public register.
And they do.
Makes a mockery of personal identity details confidentiality.
If you want your details confidential, then make them confidential, no-ones going to do anything to persuade you not to tick the private box.
And in any case, if you request that your details are not published on the Electoral Roll, then that hits the scores on your credit rating. Which might not be important unless you need credit or a mortgage.
Just had a look in the spam box and see that I've got emails trying to flog me penis enlargement, anti-depressants, viagra, online casinos and rolex watches. So basically they are saying I'm a stressed out gambler with a crap watch and a small piece - that I can't get up.
Amazing how accurately this targeted marketing works really.
It's from the electoral roll, I've done my research. Furthermore you have only been able to opt out of your records being made public since 2002. Ironically not many people know about the opt out tick box or the implications. For me it showed my last three addresses and where I work all for a small fee.

Worst attempt at deliberate miss understanding ever.
I did even imply that councils don't sell it I said that you were making it sound like they were strongly encouraged to sell your address. I stated there are two registers, one public (and sold) one private (and not). It is YOUR choice which one you're one and the council will not encourage you one way it the other.
There are also other ways to increase your credit rating whilst not being on the public register but yes it is harder. So in actual fact the only people trying to encourage you to be on the public register are credit companies so place the blame where it belongs (capitalism).
Well, that was a bit harsh, Harveys.
This is not my specialist subject as you can tell, but like many others I've suffered the consequences, and learned the hard way.
But yes, when I asked my district council, they confirmed they did sell electoral roll information to marketing companies, etc. Asked why?....... because central government pressured them into finding new revenue streams, and public register information was one of their directives. That is exactly what I was told by a member of district council staff.
On being told that, I did opt for not being included on the public register.
I later applied for a mortgage but was turned down despite having maintained an impeccable credit record for a long period.
The reason I was turned down ......I was not included on the public register.
