No - not at all, very relaxed. You obviously can't rock up dressed like a tramp, but smart casual is fine. How long since you played there? Usual degenerates are still there, but a few new faces and the odd mouthy yank onliner. Quite entertaining. Seen La Coren in there a few times, but she doesn't slum it at the low end.
Tournament lasts anything up to eight hours (latest I've been an active participant is finishing third a couple of months back, and I didn't get out of there until about 2:30)

There was a mouthy guy on one of the tables that night too, seem as interested in yakking to one of his mates on another table about some rolex he'd won the weekend before. I know a couple of other people who used to play there, they've been on the same table as Ms Coren and weren't impressed with her (as a poker player!)

I go all-in. He thinks for a rather short while (about what I don't know), and then calls. He has 5s 5d which is I guess sort of an overpair, but since my 5 has a better kicker I take the pot. He ends the hand with about 4500 and I double-up and then some.
This makes no sense, your 5 and 'kicker' are irrelevant he has 2 pair you have 3 of a kind, you win because you have a better hand not a better kicker.
Sadie, I think what he's saying is that as they both hold a 5, his 'kicker' (the 3) is better than the villain's (the other 5) because his 3 completes the trips, while the 5 doesn't, if you get my drift. At least, that's how I interpreted it. Strange to refer to half of a pair as a kicker though. :-)
I think the style of play that the poster used was interesting. The check raise may have drawn in some of the players who folded after the flop but there's alway's a danger that a fish may call after a check raise and hit a diamond flush.

LOL - 'Vic Bullshit'. I've lost count of the number of no-hopers I've sat across from in there telling all and sundry about how much they've won in so-and-so cash game - all the while playing marginal hands like a 60 year olf housewife in Vegas. Not sure who your mates are - unless you're pally with Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey and Johnny Chan I'd say if she sat across from them she'd send them home shirtless with their tails between their legs (metaphorically speaking, of course - otherwise it'd be worth it). She's certainly one of the better players 'out there' in publicpokerland and, from what I've seen, would rinse most average casino pros dry.
My birthday today - son (sonic) is taking me to The Vic on Saturday and treating me to the 7.45 £52 tournie. Only played live about half dozen times (cashed once) down my local, £10 buy in 10 - 15 of us. Nervous, tips please - tells, aggressive or tight, any advice gratefully taken.
Happy birthday Sunbury, that is a great present, play your own game however as its a new place with new players I would suggest play a little tighter than normal while the blinds are low so you can get a feel for the table.

Just treat it exactly the same as your local live games. Most of the people in there on a Saturday will be crap anyway - not a great deal of skill on show and you'll see a LOT of fish in there. The tournament is going to be a better standard than the cash games, but even then most of the good players won't bother with it because there is far more money to be made fleecing stupid rich tourists in the cash games. No point asking about 'tells' - unless you've played against an opponent a few times and can see the way he bets based on previous flops, showdowns, odds etc, 'tells' are useless. Don't deviate from your normal playing style - if you're an aggressive player, play aggressive, if you're a cautious player, don't go out all guns blazing just because it's a different environment to the one you're used to. Ignore the 'banter' from the people in there telling you they've been playing for years, just won two bags down at some other casino or are on a run of bad beats like you wouldn't believe - 98% of it is bullshit.

On some tables, when it's quiet. Most of the time there's enough dealers there (and I've never been in a tourney where there weren't dealers at every table). Usual casino mix of skill - some good, some dreck, most average.

Could be anywhere between 50 and 100 - never played there on a Saturday, but I imagine it's pretty busy
Sunbury forgot his passport....so after 2 hours of panic and rushing we got registered at the vic
Great night was had - both went out too early on AQ (a hand which we now have our own name for!!) Dad got unlucky in the show down and i got out pokered by a godfather lookalike....
I won the buy in money and bar bill on the blackjack tables and we both had a brilliant night. We will be going again for sure.
