I've been encoding some of dad's old VHS tapes from the 80s for Father's Day. Figured there might be a few more who'd like to see the goals from the Everton win back in '86! Hope the Finches guys don't mind, figured they're probably not selling these any more...

UPDATE: Scroll down for the 4-3 rainy thriller against Watford, and the comeback against, and demolition of, Liverpool in the Soccer Sixes.

Remember it like it was yesterday. Christ they had some team then as well. Cracking game, that. I've still got man-love for Jim Melrose, and Thommo was one of my favourite players ever.

That has made my weekend watching that again.  That was the first time I had seen us win a game in the top flight and against one of the best teams in the counrty in a great game made it very special.

God I remember this one! I was about to set off and meet my mates but the wife put severe 'brownie point' pressure on me. I'm afraid I opted for home life.

Also, despite the great memories of 85-86 etc, is it sacrilege to say it looks a bit pedestrian? I'm sure I'll be shot down in flames for suggesting it looks a bit like League 1 highlights!

I remember this game.. Shame I didn't see the bloody 3rd goal. I was standing in front of the Arthur Waite? Stand by the advertising boards and when Melrose scored some steward was standing in the way !!

That's what you call a Father's Day present, thanks Rich. Didn't know you could improve the quality so much, and slo-mo replays to boot: you never got them with Finches! I'll try to find the other old videos, just hope your mother hasn't chucked the out! Yes. what a team we had then, all playing and working for each other under St. Lennie. Btw I think you can just spot us in the family stand as Jim M. celebrates the third goal. Thanks again,

Fantastic video, I don't suppose more are in the pipeline? Not wanting to sound too greedy ;)

Thanks for that, I made a late decision to go to that match, and have never regretted it since.

I remember the game so well. I was on cloud 9 after beating the league Champions, and there was so much to like in this old clip.

Scorers getting congratulatory handshakes from supporters.
    Supporters being allowed to stand.
Robert Lee looking 10 years old.
Adverts with London phone numbers starting just "01"

Yep and the old 1-11 numbering system on the backs of player's shirts, or #12 in John Pearson's case. .

Selhurst istill a shit heap though, there are some things that never change...

Thank you - I was there behind the goal - enjoyed the game very much and Everton were a very good side then.

Colin Walsh had a left foot sent from Heaven itself, what a player.

One of my first ever games.

I too, remember this as if it was yesterday, despite being about 8 at the time!! Was it the very next week that we beat a Gary Linekar inspired, Leicester City at home 2-0 with Jimmy getting both again?

We did beat Leicester in the next game (the following week) 2-0 at Selhurst but your memory is playing tricks regarding some of the facts!

Melrose's most notable contribution against Leicester was to be elbowed by visiting captain Steve Walsh who was sent off for violent conduct.

Gary Lineker did not play for Leicester that day, indeed he had already buggered off to Barcelona!

Both Charlton goals came in the second half and were both  scored by Mark Stuart.

Following that game we went to West Ham and won 3-1 (the famous 9-second goal) but then lost our next five games in a row and did not win again until December 28th when we beat Man City 5-0.

Oh that 9 second goal - I remember being slightly late and not particularly rushing to the stand, who cares if you miss 20 seconds or so?

Where can you get a Vhs thingy that moves from old videos to dvd .....
I have bundles of old charlton footage, I used to tape any old news clip from the telly (saddo) inter mingled with clips from "tutti frutti" and alike from my early days lol

oohaah, the machine we've got is a Sharp DV/RW 360 which we've had for a while. I think it came from Curries or Comet. JiMMy has used some sort of gizmos of his own to digitalise and edit these goals but it's all too clever for me! Using the video copier you can get up to around 8 hours of tape on to a disc.
