Ray Richardson's Athletic of Charlton

Shine's thread on his art reminded me of Ray Richardson.  Woolwich born artist and Addick.

  • What a load of crap. I've seen better paintings done by 10 year olds.
  • Oh, you're so controversial.
  • I am sure there is a painting at the The Union on Royal Hill by this lad.

You're lucky to know such infant prodigies.

Quite likely as he works out of Greenwich these days.   Me and MOG had a drink with him.  Nice bloke.
  • Not my cup of tea, but good luck to him.
  • I'm very much a dog lover but english bull terriers have got to be the ugliest dog going.
  • Ray is the featured Londoner on the Robert Elms show now

    Talking about his new film
  • Ray is good chums with my cousins fella Gary Mansfield who is also an artist.
He does a great podcast if you’re into them, MizogArt.
One is with Ray, shall have to revisit.

    I like his stuff.

  • Ray was on Robert Elms "Listed Londoner" on Radio London today or last Monday I think. I didn't catch it live but worth a listen on iPlayer or some such, I would imagine.
  • There is some of his artwork in Bonds barbers in Blackheath.

That's where he gets his hair cut.

    My brother knows him too
  • Visited his studio at Woolwich Dockyard when Riverside did its annual open to the public thing. Liked his work very much - reminded me a little of Edward Hopper - and he seemed like a decent chap.

Disappointed in myself that I didn't make it to his show last year.
  • Yeah, his stuff reminds me of Hopper too. It's not really to my taste, but It's got that way of bringing out a feeling of familiarity, but also - I don't know - 'coldness'? in you when you see it. Might not be the best way to describe it but can't think of a better word. Maybe 'unease'? Anyway, I think he's pretty under-appreciated in his time

This thread also reminds me how much of a prick Chirpy was/is...
  • I went to his show at the gallery up town last year or the year before.

Was lucky enough to find him there, with his dog, and so got a signed catalogue.

Hopper is a good reference but RR is less photographic. I like his choice of subject matter. He had some really good, small boxing paintings at his show that I'd have loved to bought. He captures movement very well.

  • My mistake, Ray has yet to take part in the podcast.
But he uses Gary aka The Admiral as his muse quite frequently

Love that. The crisp lines of the caravan, the shading on the crease of the trousers...
  • Like Ray's, Doreen's work would fit in nicely in out gaff - https://www.bbc.com/news/in-pictures-46959155
  • ......absolutely love the one of Bartlett Park, Poplar
  • .....and the one of Salmon Lane, used to go for a lovely Chinese meal up there.
