So, who is Charlton Athletic?

Just wondering......I have asked it before?  What is it?  With a whole set of new faces in the team, management and board over the last nine months,  it therefore leaves , the shirt, the Valley, our memories and ourselves as this link to a club we support and wouldn't change for the world!

  • Boards, managers and players come and go with varying degrees of success but for me it's us supporters and in our case the ground that are the soul of the club.

Charlton Athletic is a state of consciousness. Whilst your first association with the concept "Charlton" can come about by other influences especially nowadays, more than likely because it is not a fashionable brand, it will have been through a family tradition and location. I can honestly state that I had no other choice, funnily enough when there was so much other choice to be had. The threads that bind me to Charlton bind me to my family and are very deep rooted. Like pets are said to, I have become very much like my football club, I err on the side of being a pessimist and I could never in any way be regarded as flash or on show. Of the hundreds of times I have seen a Charlton team play, I can probably count on the fingers of one hand feeling comfortable with a performance and been sure in the knowledge that we would win without doubt. My life is squeaky bum time and I have aquired and perfected that in major part through too many hours at the Valley waiting for the often excrutiatingly inevitable kick in the bollocks of a last minute equaliser from the opposition.  With Charlton my cup is always half empty I am afraid and it turns out that suits me.  So what if we have brought in 12 good fresh faced prospects for the new season? You know and I know that that guarantees feck all in Charlton land. On the other hand...we can but dream of better things to come, aspire to the heady days of just being privilaged to feed off of the crumbs left over from the big boys at the top table. A dreamer and a pessimist thats me, a Charlton Athletic supporter.

  • Thank you soapy-jones......a lot to ponder on.....I like your analogy of 'pets'. Without being flippant, the state of conciousness is very real...I suppose the dreams are inevitably those of an optimist aren't they?  Pessimism is best described in terms of Charlton, is not daring to expect and to be grateful for the crumbs from the table........maybe that was the issues after our few years in the premiership......we were missing our rocky and unpredictable days.

What is 'England'? .. it is a concept. Populations and Kings and Queens and trees and houses will come and go but England, like CAFC will always remain, thought Powell and Prince may wax and wane.

Totally agree, although i hadn't initially thought of the badge. The Valley is Charlton's as much as we, the supporter's are Charlton's.

If Charlton didn't exist, then it would have to be invented.

Charlton Athletic's like a chronic illness.  You'd probably not have chosen it, but it's part of you, you learn to live with it and miss if it if was gone
