Knows where the back of the net is. Would be pleased if we got him (coming off an excellent year with Bury). My only worry is our track record of signing Northerners who 'fail to settle'.

Hmmmm. Might be that I have been fed a line from that site then. Heard it from a friend who lives in Wigan. Said it was doing the rounds on the northern rumour mill towards the end of last week and that it had started up again today. He seems to think Lowe isn't training with the first team as he is weighing up several options.0 -

It would also be nice to have a pacy striker. I'm not convinced we need 5 strikers though. We can get away with starting the season with 3/4 and add on loan if necessary.There are decent 6'1 target men - Shaun Bartlett. Not that I'm advocating us re-signing him
I think overall build rather than height is more important.0 -
Was named League Two player of the year. Know what Leroy means though. Has a whiff of Neil Redfearn about it (older player who has roots in the north).
That said, he banged the goals in last season and had a pretty decent record at Chester before that.

There are decent 6'1 target men - Shaun Bartlett. Not that I'm advocating us re-signing him I think overall build rather than height is more important.Agree. Wagstaff also gives us a pacey option up front.Definitely more about build (and style of play). We've had centre backs that are about 6 ft (eg Sodje) but more convincing in the air than others taller than them.Ideally we'd get an Iwelumo type - well over 6 ft, strong, hard working etc, a striker completely different to what we have. A 32 year old winger/striker doesn't sound anything like a target man or similar.0 -

419 career appearances, 119 goals, but better than a goal every 2 games for Bury recently, including a run of nine league games on the trot where he got on the scoresheet, and was instrumental in Bury's promotion with 27 goals, only beaten in the league by Donaldson.0

No matter what style of football you play, you can't expect to win games week in week out without having a unit up front who will do chasing for you, hold the ball up to bring others into play and offer you that outlet when you're under the cosh (unless you're Barcelona). I think lowe would be a useful player, but would rather we spent it on a 'presence' type striker than a goalscorer (Benson and BWP will hopefully be the out and out goalscorers)

I'd be happy if we did sign him - certaintly don't need another 6ft plus non-scoring forward as we alraedy have Benno & now Hayes. At least this guy knows where the ball is & broke a 53 year old club record last year by scoring in 9 (NINE) consecutive games...........some of our strikers are lucky to get that many during a whole season.

A fair point, but players tend to settle faster when they are playing well, scoring goals and winning games.0 -
Lowe might have been a better option than Hayes. After years as a journeyman he came into the light over the last two seasons as a maker and scorer with a useful side in Bury. Knill, his old manager is now at Scunthorpe and I suspect he may end up there.. He does a bit of skysports punditry and talks as well as plays a good game. If anything he is a starter and focal point of the attack and not a come off the bench man.
I M O he shouldn't be signed unless he is to be regarded as a first team regular
