With the expected departure of last seasons whipping boys in Francis and McCormack I wonder if it is possible for us to go through the season without having an "official" scapegoat ? Only three of last seasons team are likely to regularly start imho and that's BWP, Jackson and Elliot and perhaps not even Elliot. Given that I suspect BWP and Jackson are Teflon and the new signings look of a good calibre for our level we just might manage to drain the poison out of The Valley chalice this year. I hope it's possible but am I just being stupid in thinking that ?

The first time Elliot concedes from distance the rumblings will start.

Personally think Elliot has the #1 shirt at present (don't agree mind) but suspect it will be Sullivan's by the end of November.

We haven't got rid of them yet. Maybe we should keep one of the useless c***s around just to give us a focus for our ire?

Reading Ben Robert's blog I think the scapegoat is going to Alex Dyer...

    yes you are : - )

Seriously, I think people enjoy having a whipping boy and will find one regardless.

Could you ask the players to try really hard in every game and then we might not need a whipping boy?

  • I guess Mervyn Day was one of our scapegoats in the Premiership , people said 'All he does is stand their with his arms folded'

I would imagine if we were to win every game 15-0 it still wouldn't be good enough for some people.

We've always had a whipping boy, even the season when we were competeing for european quaification. Next season will be no different, Benson or Docherty are the likely main targets, maybe Taylor out of the new lot.
  • if we win every game no one will get it, so i am up for a season of no defeats or else they are all

So the only thing the above posters have to moan about is people who also moan?

Lets have a season with no whipping boy for a change -I know it will be hard for those who need one but it's like giving up ciggies - you will feel better for it in the long run. Maybe Powell needs to keep Francis or McCormack to keep the hounds happy and lay of the other players.

    Jeez.

Can't we just chip in and buy a goat and take it to every home match and then if we're playing bad, just point at it & blame it instead of picking on the players.

We could share it around on a weekly basis like we used to do at school with a hamster, gerbil or whatever & would also count towards one extra season ticket sold.

But who will we blame for buying the goat in the first place?

But what if he/she is only carrying out instructions from you?

Frankly the fickle nature of much of the carping means that any of our players new or existing who have more than a match or twos poor form will come in for it. And some will just have blind spots over certain individuals.

Take Semedo last season. Most thought he was one of our best performers but some just refused to acknowledge that.

Good point. Blame the goat's mother or McCormack.

Feed the goat and he will score?
