It's High Time We Had Another Thread About Mikel Alonso

edited September 2011 in General Charlton
From that 100to1 article in the programme he comes across as a really interesting and intelligent man.  Not for him the usual Q&A about Playstation games, karaoke tunes and Waggy's dress sense.   This is a guy who prefers watching political documentaries, playing the saxophone and barbecuing chorizo.
He can speak three languages, play two musical instruments (well he's tried), has a degree in economics and has studied philosophy at masters level.   The last film he watched wasn't some shoot-em-up gangsta flick; it was a documentary about the "financial meltdown".  His favourite zoo animal isn't the typically blokey lion/tiger type answer; he's interested in the feeding habits of the giraffe.  For cartoons he's chosen wider than The Simpsons or Family Guy and has gone for what appears to be some sort of cowboy morality tale.  Best of all are his answers about sport.  When they ask the question about other sports, he doesn't prattle on about his golf score, as the others do when they are keen to remind us that football is a profession where you get every afternoon off.  No, he's interested in the culture behind baseball.  And finally football;  this is a man who has the wit to see past consistently picked Lionel Messi and who clearly rates Pele above Maradona.  What a guy!

Gotta say Lucky luke is a quality cartoon. Used to be shown over here at some point. Can't remember what channel, probably on cable.

To be fair to the younger players who have been interviewed - Alonso is 31 years of age, so has had more of a life to do other things. I agree though, he is more of an intellect than most footballers!

If Sergio Leone made cartoons, that's the sort of cartoon he'd make.

Never trust someone who thinks Pele is better than Maradona.

    Most famous for not scoring:

Header against England - saved by Banks

Dummy round Uruguay keeper - hits it wide

Shot from half way line - goes wide.

Maybe he's lining himself up for a slot on university challenge?

I think Alonso's so intelligent that the government bought him from as soon as we signed him to use his brain in a super top secret M.I.5 operation.
