Premiership chiefs touting a "No relegation" league

Surely this is a wind up?

Complete prick the bloke being interviewed. How the hell have we let our game be run by these morons.  Keeps going on about "look at America".  Literally different ball games out there and nowhere near as sacred as our game.

  • Can't see this happening Rodney.
  • Its not a wind up and was proposed a couple of years back by a foreign owner. Apparently its the foreign owners idea again and they want to do it so they make even more money. However even if the owners do vote for this the F.A have the power to veto the decision and they say that they'll never allow it to happen any way.
  • To be honest, I just wish they'd hurry up and form a European Super League so the big 4 (or however many) f**k off and let our league become competitive again.
  • Would never happen.
  • Just a couple of idiots testing the water, like the other year with playing an extra game outside the UK.  Nothing to see here.
  • Whether it happens or not the sheer arrogance of these pricks and total disregard for anyone outside their bubble is sickening.

    Yep, you are right.
  • Wouldn't be so certain of people saying it'll never happen, why not?

The teams in the top division would keep on going to games and that's where ALL of the money is.  There would be some outrage of course but things change all of the time in football.

Playing a bit of devil's advocate here but the way football gets run - nothing would surprise me.

Now here's the clincher..............what would most of you think if we were in the top flight at the time of this being voted on?

How would you vote if you had a say in it?

It would be a no from me.

Because it's the most stupidest suggest in sporting history and will lead to a collapse of the game. There are some rich and powerful people outside of the premiership. Can you see them excluding some of the larger teams like Leeds from this new division? Utterly ridiculous and will never ever happen.

    Agree

And it might actually be good for any teams in the Football League.

Without the promise of premiership riches league teams can have sensible budgets and a competitive league not made uneven by parachute payments.

And how long before the closed shop gets boring?

    Hypothetical question.

It's March 2014.  The Closed shop is proposed to commence the next season and Charlton are sitting 8th in the Premier league.

Other clubs say if you don't vote for it then you won't be invited.   Vote for and be part of it.  Vote no and walk away?

**EDIT**  Tango beat me to it.  Was a time I would have kicked his ass.  I must be getting old : - )
  • See who excluding teams like Leeds?  The money orientated owners of Liverpool, City, United etc?  Absolutely.

The FA?  Maybe not but then again I'm not sure what motivates them either.

Would the game collapse?  Would you stop going to Charlton if we couldnt "get into" the top division?  Would grass roots football cease to exist?

Don't think you can never say never and you certainly can't underestimate the back handed and snide tactics of the people in power.

What's stopping foreign owners who 'want' this to say, "you either grant us our wish or we leave".  All these clubs with huge amounts of debt will simply go bust wouldn't they?
  • Would the game collapse?  Would you stop going to Charlton if we couldnt "get into" the top division?
No, as the Premiership would cease to exist as far as any other team is concerned. Our ultimate aim would then be to try and win the Championship.
  • Never read anything so ridiculous in all my life.

If this was proposed how are we going to get back in the Premiership? WIll be unfair on those who are out of the Premier League.
  • Didn't you have to be "elected" to the league many moons ago?
  • Didn't you have to be "elected" to the league many moons ago?
Yes, I think Scarborough in '87were the first to be promoted automatically
  • Didn't you have to be "elected" to the league many moons ago?
    To division four. yes.

What did Tango's donkey ever do to you, Henry?
  • Breathtaking arrogance.
You know you're in trouble when people in football start using terms like 'stakeholder' and quoting the NFL model.
If even one of these foreign owners should express the slightest interest in taking us down that route, they should have their card very firmly marked by the FA.
    What a load of bollocks.

  • As much as we deride the FA, I reckon they'd be well on top of this one should it ever seriously look like getting off the ground, as opposed to pure speculation as it is right now. Don't forget that some of the big teams may vote against the prospect anyway- Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, City, Arsenal, they won't care who goes down/up as it won't particularly affect them.
  • Oddly though, the NFL share out the best players every year.  I'd be in favour of that if we'd just finished 17th in the Prem.
  • I can see it happening as a Prem 1 of 20 teams and a Prem 2 of 22, more likely than euro Super League
  • To be honest, I just wish they'd hurry up and form a European Super League so the big 4 (or however many) f**k off and let our league become competitive again.

    This
  • Wouldn't want it even if we were in it.  Any system that is entirely closed would become stagnant.  Teams at the bottom end would have no incentive to improve.  Fans at the bottom end of the league's main thrill is beating the drop.  Other than that it's the very occasional chance of giving the ig boys a bloody nose.  Even in the (very socialist NFL) the mix of teams changes fairly regularly.

Precedent in (Rugby) Super League of course - I think that can be considered a success.

That's on a franchise basis from memory (which gets regular reviews).

Here we go, Rugby League rules. Surely it's not beyond comprehension for the PL?

Applications for licences were accepted from existing Super League clubs. Clubs competing in the Co-operative Championship, the division below Super League, could apply if:
    - they competed in the 2009 or 2010 Grand Finals, or won the Northern Rail Cup
    - they had a stadium with a capacity of over 10,000
    - they had not been insolvent at any point since 2008
    - they had a turnover of at least £1 million in 2009 or 2010
    - they had an average attendance of over 2500 in 2009 or 2010 [1]
  • I like it how it is
  • See who excluding teams like Leeds?  The money orientated owners of Liverpool, City, United etc?  Absolutely.

And foreign owners who don't want it like Leicester's chairman? Too many lawyers for it to ever happen. Utterly ridiculous.
  • Wasn't the guy from the premier league basically asking the government for help in stopping this becoming a possibility? It would be an absolute travesty. Relegation dogfights are far more entertaining than any top of the table clash.
