Newly-promoted Dulwich Hamlet returned to the Ryman Premier with an opening day victory over pre-season title favourites Lowestoft Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Goals in each half, llis Green on 26 minutes and Erhun Oztumer from the penalty spot after 73, gave ten-man Dulwich a 2-0 home win over the Trawler Boys.

Maidstone United – promoted with Dulwich from Ryman South – had to be content with a point from a 1-1 home draw with Wealdstone in front of a bumper crowd of 2,138.

Rory Hill gave the Stones the lead right on half-time, only for Chris Moore to pull the 'other' Stones back on terms 12 minutes into the second half.

The two sides promoted from Division One North endured a mixed day.

Thamesmead Town, playing at their highest level ever, were beaten 4-0 at home by Hendon, Casey McLaren gave the visitors a 29th minute lead that much-travelled striker Jefferson Louis doubled on 78 minutes.

Two goals in the final five minutes from Anthony Thomas and Brendon Horner completed a good afternoon for Gary McCann`s side.

Grays Athletic, a seasoned side at this and higher levels, beat Bognor Regis Town 3-0 win at Nyewood Lane with goals from Joao Carlos after 21 minutes, Jack West on 64 and Aaron Gonzales 12 minutes from time...........................

I don't know the details, but I know Wealdstone have always had a rep in non-league. I guess Stones were a bit green not to predict a bit of agg? http://maidstoneunited.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/message-from-terry-casey-following.html
Maidstone have had some trouble over the last few weeks. They played a game in Calais a few weeks ago, and a few fans caused some trouble on the Ferry on the way home. It is also claimed by some that the trouble on Saturday was caused by the Maidstone fans throwing beer over the away supporters.
  • Have you seen thishttp://www.nonleaguematters.co.uk/global/attendances/ ? Its the non league attendance figures

Maidstone are 10th (highest team outside the conf). Dulwich are 26th (3rd highest outside the conf) out of 250
  • Went to see Cray Wanderers last night good 2-1 win over Canvey Island with Alex Stavrinou outstanding.
  • Brother scored for Folkestone in a 5-0 win over Sittingbourne
  • Thamesmead having a shocking start. 4-0 & 5-0.
  • To be fair to Thamesmead Town they are a tiny club and by far the smallest club to have ever played at Ryman Premier level so they are going to find it tough. All at the club still can't believe they got promoted from the Kent League to Ryman 1N so another step up is huge. Lowestoft who they played and lost 0-5 to last night have lost each of the last 3 play off finals so always a tough ask...
  • Mark Doig ‏@MarkDoigFC
Lee Clarke special - Welling 2-1 Cambridge
  • Ben Davisson(ex charlton) played centre half for Cray last night, very young but very impressive, Cray are lucky to have Joe Francis as assistant manager with his Charlton connections, and Jenko as manger who will always give youth it's chance. I thoroughly enjoy watching them and the way they like to play the game. Not withstanding the passion shown on the bench. Looking forward to Hornchurch at home Saturday.

Cracking atmosphere at #dhfc we fought the law and the law drew 0-0. Purely due to the kettling efforts of their defence. #Pigs

  • I once went to a game at the old Dulwich Hamlet ground, round about 1990. It was a vast stadium that had seen big crowds for FA Amateur Cup games in the 1950s. On my visit there were a few hundred fans under a stand roof that showered you with rust when hit by the ball. There were rusting old turnstiles enveloped in brambles. And an old dear kitted out in all the Hamlet garb was waving a rattle, an anachronism even then - MOG might remember her. What's the atmosphere like in the new ground? I must take in an evening game there this season....

  • Went to the game last night. Was very impressed with Dulwich. The coach deserves a lot of credit for the way they play the game. Oz is a great little player. Liked 'The Rabble' too. Great sense of humour and good to see they have some fanatics.

Apparently at the Met Police game they sang "Repressive state apparatus, you're just a repressive state apparatus..." Also liked "No one knows us, we don't care." The Cray keeper got so much stick he turned round and applauded them at the end. Really enjoyed the night.

  • Hamlet fans - if you haven't looked at the "Old Footage of the Valley" thread yet. Have a look. The Old Champion Hill is shown at 7-00 mins into the film. It looks like around there's around 3000 in the ground, which held 20,000.

My first visit was round 1973, when they'd get around 800-1000, in that massive ground. The terraces were railway sleepers filled with compacted shale. No sign of any concrete.

Nice to see their great start back in the Isthmian Premier, where they belong.
  • Thanks Kap. Unbeaten in 6, 14 points from 18. Good start......
