Friends of friends contacted me from Denmark back in 2005 asking if I could get them a couple of tickets for a first ever visit to Stamford Bridge. They had been unable to get tickets themselves and had worked out that a game against us was a great chance. When they heard about me, that was it. I was quite pleased to do it and they both turned up at the meeting point wearing red and white bar scarves as a sop to me in spite of being Chelsea fans. I wouldn't have gone to the game ordinarily because I didn't want to see Chelsea lift the title (I left a minute before the end) and because of a principle on the pricing. I am sure the tickets were £48 each (one seat, no hospitality, complimentary programme or car parking). Neither of the Danes was short of a few bob but they must have mentioned the price of the tickets ten times to me during the day. They couldn't believe how much it was and I was pleased to be able to explain how much better value it was to get into the Valley in the company of football fans with a longer history of following their club and not just those who could afford it. My Dad was a Chelsea fan who, with hindsight, would be only too pleased he passed away before the Abramovich era because he couldn't abide the rising cost of football and he would have been appalled that his club would go to take the piss royally. Three of my die-heart Chelsea mates had to give up their season tickets a long time ago because they have ordinary jobs and decided on getting married and having children which Joe Blogs can't afford at the Bridge. Chelsea don't care of course because there are still plenty with the dosh to spend even if they are "new" fans - just the sort Chelsea need for the day when the Roubles dry up and they find themselves with a gap they cannot bridge. I long to see it and their inability to buy the Champions League in the meantime keeps me warm.0
