Why I'm "Depressed" more than normal....

.....is the fact that My van, which is fully Taxed, MOT, Insured, etc will be "Illegal" from Midnight on January 3rd, 2012. As in, if I drive My van to work within the M25, I will be fined/taxed up to £250 per day. I would find that a bit difficult not to drive it within the M25 as I live there. My van is an R reg, but, has an MOT and a service every 6 months. The last MOT "omisions test" was clear. It starts 1st time every morning.
Anyone out there want to buy a perfectly good van, but give Me £15000 to get a "Legal" one ?

I have no idea of the new law that must be coming in, but it sounds crazy to me

there are thousands of people driving illegally without tax or insuance and get away with it - but a law abiding citizen (such as you) get caught out by some silly law that I assume is to stop carbon emmissions...............

If it were me i'd just carry on & not pay any fines etc, let it go to court & see what the press make of it !!    Carbon emmission law are a complete waste of toime when the big 2 (China & USA) don't care & wont change.

    Have you seen this site?

    http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail?itemId=1082004166&r.i=1081997844&r.l1=1079068363&r.l2=1086021951&r.l3=1081997506&r.s=m&r.t=RESOURCES&type=RESOURCES

Fitting an approved filter. A filter can be fitted in the exhaust pipe to reduce emissions of particulate matter. Partial filters trap less particulate matter than full filters but can still improve the Euro standard of an engine by one Euro standard for particulate matter. Vehicles fitted with partial filter will only meet the relevant LEZ standard until 2 January 2012. From 3 January 2012 all approved filters will be full filters. Any vehicles fitted with partial filters will need to have these replaced with full filters prior to 3 January 2012 to continue to drive within the zone without paying a daily charge.

I don't know what the cost would be but hopefully cheaper than a new van.

Bloody EU stopping a self employed bloke earning an honest crust.

Yep. seen that "Len", but Mazda stopped making van years ago (another long Legal story) so I can't have a [quote] Approved filter [unquote] fitted.
    Thank You anyway.

AFKA: 15k was a "guesstimate" of a van. I'm sorry you need that amount to rectify a problem, if I had it I would give it to You. The point I am trying to make is that myself, and possibly many others. will be join the Unemployed on Jan 3rd through no fault of our own.
Hope You find a solution to your problem: If you need a van to move anything let Me know before Jan 2nd.

small world miserableoldgit  been trying to buy a small van for one of my sons the past few weeks,
Had to turn down a fiat the other day that was a 2001 reg because it did not comply , but an old escort diesel van does.......
so checking out a ford connect as all they all comply.......
It is a little known fact that dealers around this side of the river are a greedy bunch of motherf*****s, so the prices have risen quite considerably.
They would rather pack them off to BCA at paddock wood then sell a motor over three years old. I think the car supermarkets have caught them out on  that one, and the main dealers seem to be 'outsourcing'  them by getting them underwritten. Try buying an Audi, BMW, a few years old at the established dealers that are main dealers.
I went down to beadles vans a couple of  months ago, they did not have a second hand van under £7,000.?. and quoted me under half  what i had paid for my  ford, still under warranty....... his reply 'go to ford'.  I did....... still have the car?
Sorry to say you may have an issue of disposal of the said van, but good luck.
Surprissed the media have been so quiet about this?.....

The thing is if you are in logistics of any sort you would've been aware of this for atleast 24 months, all vehicles can be modified , not necessaryly with the standard fit conversion kit ,

They range from 1500 quid to 3600 quid,

I do feel sorry for those that are affected but it has been public knowledge for a good couple of years now and is the 2nd change in the emission zone

A good few years back, my bruv bought a van from a guy in Biggin Hill and it is still going like a trojan to this day. In March, I went to the same guy and bought a decent van at a fair price, and 9 months on  - no complaints. Maybe this will help somebody.

NLA. Wasn't aware until October this year when I recieved a TFL letter.
The "Carpet-fitting" game has been getting slower all year: This time last year a firm I worked for had 3 "FullTime" carpetfitters and were calling in extra. this year there is 1.
Also, Mazda Vans Cannot be "modified", as they no longer make the parts.

It is incorrect to blame the EU directly. The situation is that the air quality in the capital is not good enough. There are various ways to tackle the problem and what your elected leaders have decided to do is to hit older commercial vehicles to force them out of the capital.

The emissions limits are EU driven.

My point is the solution chosen is local, that's why I said "directly".

The decision that the air quality is not "good enough" comes from the EU is my point hence the need for the 'local solution' which stuffs MOG and probably many other small one man bands like him.

Moggy fella, treat yourself to another trip down the M3. There's a commercial dealer in Pokesdown I've heard good things about and maybe we're far enough away for the London factor to have reduced a bit. Speaking to some of the dealers down here business is also slow, even for Christmas so you might be able to pick up a bargain....and take in a Cherries game!

This new ruling is a joke. We have 6 lorrys at work and its costing 4k to 5k for each one to get the filters fitted.

Considering we have no choice but to get this done AND we have to basically shut down for a month during the olympics as it looks like with the 'olympic lanes' etc any schedule is simply unworkable.

Where do they expect small companys to find the money? We are running on a shoestring as it is.

And to top it off its only for inside the M25 so if you work in Kent, Manchester, Leeds etc you can crack away with our old motor chucking out all kinds of crap into the air, but as long as London air is clear thats fine etc, what a joke! Its just another tax, end of!

Sorry for the rant but all these extra costs make it likely I could be checking out the 'looking for work' thread come the new year.

Mog, I am in the same boat mate. My 2001 Mercedes Vito is fully serviced, mot'd etc and will go forever. This new law is just a cash cow against motorists.

Just because this information has been around 24 months, as stated earlier, doesn't make it right. A new approved filter costs between 800 - 2000 quid but my van is worth only 1500.

I've been searching for a newer can for the last 5 weeks and I'm totally hacked off with the crap that the motor dealers come out with.
Seriously thinking that as of Jan 3rd I'm jacking it in and going on benefits.
