Play by ear, as Leroy said don't get bogged down in theory if you play what everyone else does you might as well listen to them, if it sounds good its good! I've been playing for over 30 years I don't know my pentatonic from my gin and tonic but I know what sounds good when I play and write! Just don't quit when you hit a brick wall persevere and you'll get through it!
Yeah, I am self taught just through learning the basic chords then from there, following people that I liked. I learnt a lot playing by ear. I've been playing for around 10 years now. Managed to go to College and Uni doing music and only by uni I started learning theory. I just wish I had one of my guitars on me now days.
my first guitar was also a crappy one ,tried selling it for $100 & after a year on consignment in the local guitar store it was still there - so I ended up taking the low E string off, tuning it to Open G & just using it for Keef style sounds & it's great fun to play
I tried to play for years but couldnt read music (still can't) and didn't have the dexterity to play anything complex, just chords (not bar chords) but seven years ago the gf bought me a Chinese handbuilt Blueridge (theyre all made in USA now) the thin neck and incredible action changed everything and I found that apart from playing quicker my timing was a lot better. Can still only play chords but have now at least performed (charity gigs only) so moral of the story...don't try and learn on a shit guitar.
ps. Bought a 5 string Ibinez bass last year and was playing to a good standard within a week...yep, I initially chose the wrong instrument...I'm a sex god with this little beauty hanging round my neck
Nice one Oakster I did that for a while as well on my old Tele and pretty much got the sound of Keef but I have to say lacking the "genius" in the way he actually times it all. Recently sold a couple of guitars I wasn't using and bought a Gibson ES 339 which is a smaller, lighter version of the ES 335 and I have to say it is one of the best guitars I have ever played considering it's a semi-solid body it doesn't feedback at all. Mrs. Dave is the voice of sanity around Guitars otherwise we would be falling over the bloody things.
Gonna pick up a Yamaha Pacifica 112 next week, expensive enough piece of kit but heard they are meant to be superb quality guitar. Least the price of it will give me the drive to stick with it.

Before you splash out, Bob (who's Charlton) in Greenwich market on Thursdays has a Yamaha ERG 1 and a Laney amp both in good nick for £80.
If I have enough before Brighton then I'm gonna pop into GAK and buy a new Bass, can't decide which one though.
Is the Epiphone the short scale? If it is it must give an advantage of moving around quicker..the only minus being shorter strings so less thud, but you can be sure the pick-up will be very good.

It is yes. I generally don't like the thudding of strings as it makes things sound too "tinny"

Would probably nominate @3blokes ...
If a number of people specialised in a variation of instruments maybe a band could be formed.
My favourite guitar player is johnnie Greenwood, when he goes solo.

Got a Westone Thunder 1A. Currently considering buying a Jazz Bass so my Chic licks sound right!
I like him in small doses but I don't think I could take a whole gigs worth.

what brand are the top 2.
Also I've never played an epihone that didn't go microphonic at stage volume.
