Anyone been to Scunthorpe's ground?

I am coming back to the UK in March and am going to the away game at Scunthorpe but need some travel information.
Basically, on the way home there is a train from Scunthorpe to London departing at 17.18 and this costs only £13.00.
The next train is at 18.08 and costs £41.00! I am not going to ask why the fares are so different, the workings of privatised railways are ludicrous, but does anyone who has been to Scunny before reckon that it is feasible to get from the ground at the final whistle at 4.45 back to the station for 5.18?
The Scunny site says the best way from the station to the ground is by taxi and that it is a two mile trip but obviously various factors come into play in terms of how long it would take getting back to the station.
Anyone with any information on this?

Final whisle is never before five these days, and its about two miles to the station. You could have a cab lined up and just be ok, but it will be touch and go.0 -
Buy the 5.18 ticket and if asked by the conductor on the train just say the police wouldn't let you leave the ground / escorted you back slowly / put you on this train.
Not such a good excuse when following Charlton I guess.

I'd give you a lift but I doubt if it would be any quicker by the time we got away.

Because - like all other train companies - they are a rip off and we the customer get completely shafted.

It's normally not a problem, but then we are normally all put on one train no matter what, not sure what Charlton aways are like.
They raise eyebrows if you're on the 10pm train after having a few beers locally however....

Right quick tip
If you go to Althorpe Station which is two miles away from the city centre back towards Doncaster the same train you'd need arrives there as 17.23, which gives you more breathing space and is going away from traffic if you need a bus/taxi or anything

Local knowledge I suspect - they are well aware that no one who's been at the game will be on the early train so they make the one that everyone catches more expensive.I'd book the early train and leave a couple of minutes early - a two mile walk should be about 12-15 minutes so if you leave at 4.55 you should make it. You risk a last minute goal but the chances are that we would have already won/lost at that point anyway.

Ormiston, I was looking at this game aswell.
The cheapest way I've found is to break up the journey, i.e
Kings Cross to Doncaster £10 thats the 11.48 rriving at 13.24 (Hull Trains)
A return between Doncaster and Scunthorpe is £10.20, the 13.37 gets to Scunthorpe at 14.02.
Get the return at 18.08 arrives at Doncaster at 18.38.
The get the Hull trains 19.28 to Kings Cross which arrives at 21.09 £10.
Total cost £30.20.

Thanks All, I think I will err on the side of caution as suggested by Elfsborg Addick and just get the later train.
After all, there is no point ruining a once a year visit by stressing out about catching a train home, might as well pay more and relax and get absolutely wankered on whatever they brew iin Scunthorpe.
By the way, I have not got a train to an away game out if London since the infamous Man United relegation game in 1990 at Old Trafford (I am a coach or car man), so can you tell me if it is possible to drink on the train, I mean buying beers on board?0 -
You can buy beers on the train, however they are expensive, better getting some cold tins for the train in an off license near the station.0

Swansea away was a dry train back until we got back across the Seven. Well it was for the away fans, they would serve the Welsh fans. Mind you the policing after the game was like something out of the 70s.

Apparantly there had been an altercation outside the station before the game, does not alter the obnoxious behaviour of plod after though. The met police were okay
