Despite all this confusion, i think i've worked it out now. Gareth Thomas is so heterosexual and macho that although he detests gary he is compelled to do it in order to totally dominate another male. A bit like being so communist you are almost facist without realising it. I'm offended by the Addams family song, because it makes me seem as though I'm part of an incredibly unwitty and repetitive fanbase (a song that was once reserved for west country teams is now sang toward fans who live near and amongst the people singing the song?!).
Indeed not. I am offended by the Addams Family song, for example and my sister is not my mother (or watever the line is!).
You don't have to be gay or black to be offended by those songs or in fact any kind of discrimination.
No worse than our manager and star striker having to hear the Lisbie song I'd guess.As far as we're aware, two (poss three) of our 1st team squad at Spurs are gay. Does it make a difference? course it doesnt.

Must confess, I didn't know there was a Lisbie song... and while I am naturally keen to know what the lyrics are (if only to know exactly how wrong it is), I am hesitant to ask...
And even though I'm sure many of the comments are not intentionally offensive on this forum, the lazy attitude toward gay people and the one-liners that are inevitable spouted on here as much as anywhere else (as per the Oxford player) pretty much answers the original question. "I'm not anti-gay, I was only joking when I said the pink side!" etc. - it's institutional I suppose is the word.

bloke at work is a bit artistic and musicy etc and can't stand football and blokish stuff - says he quite likes the idea of being gay but couldn't be doing with somebody trying to stick their c**k up his a**e. Guess there are all sorts coz i'd imagine that must be the main attraction for 'butch gays' like the welsh rugby captain - it was a lot simpler to understand when all gays acted like John Inman.
Well, I have to own up to being 'artistic', (having gone to art college) and I love my music, and when I had hair it was long.
George Best, was my hero when I grew up, a man not without his issues, but was a good friend of Jimmy Hendrix,( amongst other musician's) had a fashion line/shop, and had long hair, and had a decent score with woman, ( including several Miss worlds, and ex wives). I can remember a time when 'real men' did not wear aftershave. Henry Cooper must have gone out on a limb then flogging Brut?. And as for Kevin Keegan with his perm, obviously him and Souness, must have had a thing going on at Liverpool?....... I think not? Just good footballers.

Top post Leroy!i think the point is, who cares what they get up to so why bother coming out? Just to make other gaysw feel more accepted i guess. So the footballer comes out, gets a load of grief and the gay community feel a bit more 'normal'? Is that it?
Tough one this. On the one hand, you're 100% right - someone's sexuality is their own business, nobody else's. If they choose to be 'openly' gay, good for them. if they choose to stay in the closet - good for them too. There's enough prying into peoples' private lives nowadays with the celebrity-obsessed media as it is.
On the other hand, a high-profile footballer 'coming out' should certainly make it 'easier' for others to profess their sexuality (should they wish to do so) - although given the nature of some of the imbeciles that follow football, it might actively DIScourage people from coming out!
As far as I'm concerned, it's nobody's business but their own.
Why should it matter whether or not they are gay? That is the key for me.
We have to recognise that his is a process where, sadly football and footballers are probably the furthest behind of all the groups in the public domain.
The act of consenting homosexual intercourse between adults was a criminal offence in this country until the 1960's and it has taken a long time before openness and tolerance have taken root in many areas of society.
Film stars hid their homosexuality for years. Eventually some came out and I now there is relative openness in this area. I can remember a friend who worked in publicity telling me years ago that Rock Hudson was gay. I thought she was making it up. He covered it up all that time.
Politicians were also want to cover it up and until very recent time some continued to remain "in the closet", despite others including Cabinet Minister who were openly gay.
We have, as has been said, now seen Rugby players coming out. So as Leroy has said, high profile footballers brave enough to come out will perhaps, help others.
