What a quality day this was, shame we blew it against Tranmere a few days later! The thing which got me was the attendance.
How the hell they could say there was only 15,000 there was a joke! The ground was pretty full and held around 32,000 in those days
and Leicester had at least 10,000.

Here is the away match against Leicester from earlier that season.

Great day, great goals and as you say Leicester must have had 10k there.
  • Thousands of Leicester there that day. Remember them all spilling from the South Bank across the pitch into the Chicken Run. Definitely some dodgy accounting on the attendance but suspect the West Ham employees on the turnstiles pocketed a load of cash and plenty of other Leicester bunked in for free.

Great goal by David Whyte-the players looked knackered on the Tuesday against Tranmere-think we only had a squad of about 15/16 that season..

  • don't remember the Leicester pen though. One of the worst I've ever seen!

Yes that was a rubbish pen, summed up their day really. I think moving to Upton Park when we did gave the club a huge lifeline and the whole experience was a million miles away from Selhurst. Got some great memories of that time, we had a very good away record that season and just missed the play-offs!
  • pitch looks in great condition :)
  • Regarding the attendance - I seem to recall that more Leicester fans turned up than expected and many got in for free when a few turnstiles were opened to deal with the crush. That might be an urban myth though. I think Leicester blew promotion that year as well - they needed one win from their last two games and lost them both.

Remember it well, me and Pete F were stewarding on that day, trying to keep control of the Leicester Massive, they plonked us right in front of the Chicken Run. It was chaos.

We were both chatting up a couple of young foxy ladies, got nowhere as usual though.

One of my all time football memories. Watching from the home end as thousands upon thousands of Leicester first filled the away sections and then down the chicken run. Great sight ! And 15,000 ?

Loved David Whyte. Curbs told me he was a nightmare and he used to go to his house as he didn't always turn up for training. Apparently a lot of beer cans littering the garden as he had been up all night playing pool. Same problem with Jerome Thomas.

David Whyte was brilliant that season. I started supporting in 1988 and it was the first year we ever had a player anywhere near the top of the goalscoring charts.

@masicat I remember that in curbs book about David Whyte.

    15,000 haha!

Remember that day well, it was my birthday and by winning I'm sure we stopped Leicester going up automaticaly and didn't the Leicester fans have all the side terrace aswell as behind the goal

Didn't all the Leicester fans turn up that day beacuse they were up if they won? Operation Upton Park LOL Actually did not mind our games at Upton Park as we knew the Valley was to be ours again the following year.

Didn't they say that the year before too!

Got chased around the underground by a group of them in the morning. They took over all the pubs, so we took solace in the Hammers Social Bar behind the away end. Came out of there, thousands of Leicester, and Ginger Ben puts his arms out and goes "come on then Leicester". Fortunately there were no takers !

Like BDL & PeterF, I too was stewarding that day. In fact, if my (fading) memory serves me correctly, it was my debut ;-)

I'll admit that I found the whole experience of playing in the hammers garden quite pleasant (apart from the time I got jumped by some brave millwall lads who out-numbered me 4/1 in the woolwich tunnel).

Happy memories. They had more fans than us that day, I'm pretty sure of that and I think 15000 is about right, personally.
Kick off was delayed wasn't it? I remember a big fatty dribbling a baloon towards the goal then getting all upset about the chants he provoked.
As someone said, no recollection of the penalty.
I remember I didn't hang about after as there were some fairly 'emotional' leicester fans about.

Also, I like Steve Gritt's very English, manly handshake with Bob following the penalty save.
  • It was like Zulu that day, we were definitely significantly outnumbered as home fans.

As others said, pretty sure they were on for promotion and I remember watching the South Bank filling up rapidly and them looking like they were going to go for a stampede across the pitch at us any minute. Thankfully our brave stewards stood firm in the face of such overwhelming odds eh?

I was only living around the corner too so was able to walk to 'home' games back then.

Was a great day remeber them making there way accross the pitch into the chicken run. Thought we had nailed it that day only for the disapointment of tranmere as said.

That was a great day! I remember Whytes goal extremely vividly.

The Leicester fans seemed to swarm the place, & they thought they were gonna win easy & go up that day. We were the party poopers, that's for sure!

    @GRAY9

Whytey was only on loan that season. He scored 2 in 8 games in that spell(if I remember correctly), then signed permanantly in '94. I was absolutley ecstatic that we managed to get him back permanently. I think many a CAFC fan at the time felt the same way. Such a great talent, but sadly wasted.

You did witness the blossoming of Leaburn though. I think all were stunned that he made double figures that year.

    @E-cafc

I know exactly what you mean/felt about that season. Even though we missed out on the play-offs, I felt it was real triumph, considering the supposed odds against us, what with Gritty & Curbs thrust into the limelight ("2 men can't manage a team", "an experiment", etc, being some of the press claims/comments I remember), & a really tiny budget, what with all spare money going into The Valley.

There was a great team spirit in that squad. Nelsons tireless running, Simon Webster coming of age, Leaburn(as above), & Robert Lee really starting to show what he could do. Bolder, Gatting, Bumstead, Minto, Walshie to name some more heroes who battled away that year. It would've been fantastic to pip "moneybags" Blackburn to that last PO spot!

It also helped that we were out of that Croydon sh*tpit & one step closer to going home! :-)
  • I remember going straight from the game to Sheffield as we had tickets for the snooker at The Crucible. My mate, who drove and isn't a Charlton fan, was itching to leave before the end but I wouldn't let him. Drove alongside a car of Leicester fans on the M1 and held up the programme, then gave it the two-nil sign and sped away. The snooker was rubbish but met Len 'ball-crusher' Ganley and on the Sunday saw coach loads of Leeds fans driving past the Crucible after they had just clinched the title at Bramall Lane.

Never forget being held in after the game for about 10 mins and then not being able to go out the usual way, but had to walk around the back of the home end and past the main stand.............just as the Old Bill were escorting the Leicester fans out !! They couldn't have planned it better if they tried - i remember having a go at OB on a police horse who was merily watching as 5k Leciester fans tore into a few hundred of us !

Remember it kicking off afterwards on Barking Road between a mob of about 40 fancy dress clad fellas and about 6 cafc blokes.....looking back was funny, but very hairy at the time.

Probably best away support I've seen.

I seem to remember coming out of that game afterwards and heading back towards our car when some charlton fans started giving it to a shed load of leicester fans who then proceeded to run at us. You have never seen someone run so fast!
