Evening. I have been reading this forum for a while now, making only very occasional comments. However, for my first thread what better than one about spending some time in the company of our fantastic manager. Let me explain...
I work as a deputy head in a secondary school close to where SCP was born. My headteacher is also a Charlton fan and back in October we were chatting about how amazing it would be to get Chris in to talk with some kids, sign some photos etc. So I emailed the club, more in hope than expectation about the possibility of him coming to visit.
I received a quick response from the club and after a few emails back and forth I got one to say Chris had agreed.
Although the pupils are predominantly Arsenal, Man U, chelsea etc I think they will benefit from having some time in the comany of someone who is held in such high esteem by so many people and talks so much sense, not just about football but all the things that are occuring in society at the moment.
And it's a measure of the club and SCP that they have agreed to do it.
Can't wait...like a kid in a toy shop I expect...

Wow, not many managers or footballers would take time out to do something like that.

If i told my eldest CP was coming to Hurstmere to do a talk i think he'd wet himself with excitement. Danny Mills is his football coach there but it's not quite the same.

Hurstmere is a sports academy and i'm not sure what people expect ex professional footballers to be doing. Seems like quite a logical step to me.

i think we are referring to a different Danny Mills, i'm presuming the one who lives Sidcup way and played for the ressies early 90s.

SJH, oh you lucky fellow. And your kids are in for a real treat. Chris is a true class act and a real role model for young kids.

    I wish I was 14 again.

i haven't seen him AFKA but just assumed it was the Danny Mills who we flogged to Leeds - maybe it isn't. My son just said Danny Mills, ex charlton player - didn't realise there was another.

It's a very good school now and they've got great football teams in all ages. My boy is 11 so it's his first year there but they were the champions of kent in a number of age groups last year although they only seem to play against local schools at his age group and i'm not sure how the leagues / cups work.

I hope the kids appreciate him , he is a gent in every sense of the word , not big headed , or arrogant just normal , and we are lucky to have him.Can you ask him how many players he'll be after in the Summer? ;-0

As expected a top, top man. Was brilliant with the kids;articulate, humorous, encouraging. Answered loads of questions and signed loads of autographs. I said to the kids when he left that they can now see why I asked him in to speak with them. They were all in awe of him and had huge respect for him. Apparently I came across as the most thrilled to be in his company though...very true.
He deserves to do very well in his managerial career, with us I hope. Still on a high...

I went to Hurstmere School 1982-1987. Much better school now than it used to be. Steve Avory taught me PE as well, but he was useless at cricket!

  • I'm sure the kids have huge respect for you too , sirjohn , for introducing them to this special person. Hero status from now on !
