Todays dilemma

Your girlfriends, mates bloke is a plumber and you get him to do some plumbing at the same time he says he can tile aswell.. £120 a day.

So you let him loose on the bathroom.

4 days of work later, and the bathroom is not looking good.

The tiles allign at the where the walls meet, on any of the four walls

Only one wall is flat tiled the rest are bumpy and uneven.

Basically an ameteur could have done better

So you stop him working saying you want to reassess how its going.

Next day you text him saying you think it needs to be redone.

He texts saying the walls were pissed, and he was trying to help you out, and that he'll leave it there (unfinished) and want his money so far.

What do you? (apart from never employ someone you know again)

  • Does he look handy?

If not, tell him to go jump in the river. If he does, go round his house and smack him when he opens the door. He wont be expecting it and a "pre-emptive strike" often does the trick.
  • he hasn't done what was asked from him so needs no paying.
  • So basically he wants £500 to walk away as is ?.........think you already know the anwer to that one !
  • negotiate, pay him off, and get in a tiler. ALL plumbers say they can tile but it's a specialised job if you want it done properly.
  • Im gonna give him £200 for the plumbing..
  • pay him for the plumbing, give him a bit extra for his time to keep peace, but tell him firmly you will not be paying the full amount for the tiling.
Take photographic evidence in case he takes it any further, and also say you have had two other tilers round who have both said its been a botch job.
  • next time hire a professional Razil you cheapskate

would you let an amateur near your fence, no thought not!
  • tilers are like rocking horse shit...
  • Yeah sorry got the wrong end of the stick when you said tiler
  • if you pay peanuts you get monkeys

I used a builder who was recomended to me by a "friend" cabinet maker who was building my kitchen units. He did the worst bricklaying job in history. I asked him to explain why the bricks were not level, etc. He was no fool, he knew he'd done a piss poor job. I gave him a chance to recify the work at his cost or I'd get somebody else in and charge him/deduct the rectification cost from his bill. He opted for the latter. I had only paid him a deposit for the materials. In the end I didn't pay him anything for any of the work he had done, some of which was OK. As it happened the cost of recifiying came to less than the balance I owed the bloke so .....RESULT!!

My solution. Speak to the bloke, point out the tiles are not level. Give him a chance to agree and recify it, or you will get somebody in to rectify the tiling. If it costs you overall less than his quote for all the work, you will pay him the balance for everything he's done. Friendship shouldn't come into it. I suspect he know's he's done a shoddy job and will sort it out or agree to somebody else doing it.
  • oh sorry pay up for the plumbing

    OK update

    I have talked him around

asked him if he would accept same work

he said "so you arent going to pay me?"

I said " would you? What I want is you to come back and do it to the standard I want"

He said " dont think thats the best idea..."

I said " I think you are being pretty unreasonable"

He said "wot do you want me to put right?"
  • is this the new amended Richard and Judy game 'He say, You pay' ??
  • Razil - can you send me the link for the tiling blog please?

when this plumber quoted you for the job and said he could do the tiles as well presumeably he saw the walls first and therefore knew they were pissed...if he didn't think his skills were up to the job he should have at least said so and given you the option of changing your mind...and lets face it, unless he was fixing to plasterboard, every fcking wall he's ever going to encounter has been and will be pissed...politely point this out and tell him to shove his u-bend where the sun dont shine...
  • failing this...anonymously grass him up to hmrc and the dwp...
  • I'll take the pics tonight - will create one as soon as...

  • OK I had another look last night and decided the whole lot has to come down and be redone, will pay guy off and get someone else.

    :(
  • shouldn't he rectify it?
  • Walls were pissed that's a classic.

He's tiling the absolute moron. When tiling you don't plaster a fecking wall geodre you do it you tile it level -.

    Tell him bollox Raz -

good decision to pull it down mate. shouldnt pay him off full amount though.
You cant let ruff work go because you might think its ok for the first few days. But it will look worse every time you look at it believe me.
if you were to whisper me a contact number i know a perfectionist who will price it up reasonably.
  • you are so right mate, every time I look at it gets worse, have paid him off as suggested above by Bart.

  • Tilers & plumbers are a law unto themselves!
If you've used an electrician for example, I bet you haven't had to change.
